I think around 18 months DD started putting the chair cushion from her wicker chair in bed for a pillow so we went to ikea and got her one of their nice flat toddler pillows. A pillow is not required for sleeping (its an adult invention) and it seems to me most kids let you know when they want one.

This. Meg decided on her own (because we have them) and now her pillow is very special to her...she can only use HER pillow

Steal my kids picture or pretend they are yours, I will find where you live and ship all of their dirty diapers to your doorstep. Promise.
Kaylin has always had one that matches her bedding. We kept it in the chair until she was a year old, then started putting it in the crib. She only started really using it around 16 months.
Now that we have moved her to the big girl bed, she has decided to keep it with her Guess I will need to find a pillowcase that matches her new bedding. I think it is really helping with the transition because she has something familiar with her in the big girl bed.
We added a pillow a couple of months ago and he threw it out of the bed so we left it out, but lately he has been using his blankets more like pillows so I am thinking of adding a small pillow again. I say go for it, if he is like cruz and doesn't want it in there he will throw it out
I gave one t oBen when he was 1 and sleeping like ***. I thought it might help. It didn't.
Now though he sleeps with one very flat (old) regular pillow, and this small throw pillow with race cars on it that my mom gave him for Christmas 3 years ago. He will not sleep without that race car pillow!
