2nd Trimester

They found something on the u/s.

As most of you know, I went for my big ultrasound on 12/23.  The tech took a million pictures of the baby's heart and I could easily see a white spot on her heart.  When I asked the tech about it she said it looked like a "prominent pulmonary muscle" that was no big deal.  But of course, anything less than "your baby is the most perfect thing I have ever seen" will worry me so I started to get upset about it.  DH said not to worry about it until we know more, so I said nothing to my family or anyone about the spot.I haven't heard from the doc since the u/s (she wasn't in to review the results at my appt and the office has been closed until yesterday) So I called the office this morning.  The doc just called me back and said that she wants me to go in for a level II.   She didn't say anything about what it could be.  I am freaking out right now. Please help calm me down.  I just want baby girl to be ok.

  • Mrs. Jenni,

Try not to worry. I know this is easier said than done, but your DH is right, no need to start worrying until you know more information. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

  • A close girlfriend of mine had this situation w/ her daughter.  White spot on heart at big u/s.  Her MIL was a nurse for 2 decades in L&D at Kaiser Permanente & said not to worry b/c it's not super uncommon to have a white spot at that point, usually it goes away.  It did go away & she has a perfectly healthy 3 yo now.  GL to you.

    DD1 born 5/24/10.

    Missed M/C at 14 wks Feb 2012.

    DD2 born 5/14/13.

    Missed M/C at 9 wks July 2015.

    Expecting someone new 4/17/17.
  • awww, try not to worry until you have something concrete ( I know, easier said than done). I hope she's ok, you'll be in my thoughts and prayers

No prob.  Try hard not to stress at this point.  It may take a while for it to go away, but my friend got SUPER stressed/anxiety ridden, etc & that isn't good for LO.  Stay positive.

My doc has to send me to the hospital for the level II.  She sent my paperwork over to them and I have to wait for them to call me to set up an appointment. UGH.

  • I agree with the other bumpies, try not to freak out. Remember that technology is the best it's ever been and knowledge is power. Everything will be fine, no matter what! I don't know if you are a believer, but I am, and I believe that if He brings you to it, He'll bring you through it! :)

  • Oh hun. Positive thoughts. I know easier said than done but you have to think positive. Thinking of you and your baby girl.
  • A PG friend of mine was just talking to me about this yesterday.  Her last US also showed white spots on the heart, and the dr. told her that this is fairly normal.

I hope everything is ok and you get in for your Level II soon!

  • Breathe! Calm down. It will all be fine. I will keep baby girl in my T&P. There is no point stressing over something that you dont even need to stress over!

Like a PP said, it is common at this stage and it can go away. It could also be nothing.

  • My lo has a spot too, the Dr called it an echogenic focus and said they see it all the time and usually its nothing.

Someone else posted a page back about a spot on babies heart and one of the responses was this:

LO had the same thing. Got sent to a Cardiologist who looked at his heart in any and every way possible, and concluded that it was just a little extra muscle in his heart.

Had an U/S a week ago to make sure baby was head down, and the spot was gone!

I freaked out at first too, but spoke to my Dr and she thinks he's just fine. Try not to worry.

  • Oh, Jenni...I'm sure everything will be just fine.  I would be worried too.  Big hugs to you and your family.  Sending good thoughts that the level two just shows a super strong heart and no issues.
  • Man, I hope they get you scheduled very soon.
  • Yep, baby is going to be just fine. I had to have a level II ultrasound with a heart specialist as well for a potential hole. Remember, they are extremely overly cautious when it comes to giving you all the potential info about your baby.My regular ob explained it to me like this-- if your baby is born, and it does have an issue, they take it very seriously. They'll go back through all of your tests/pregnancy history, and look to see if the issue was documented. If it's evident on the previous ultrasound, but was not mentioned to you, that is a huge issue for the doctor/hospital and so basically they are protecting themselves. Of course you should know about any minor issues, but I totally get how anything minor = huge major deal to us, who have to carry this baby and worry. So truly know, they are being overly cautious here. I am guessing when you go in for your level II, everything will be ok.They told us the potential hole wasn't a hole, and although they couldnt rule out the small possibility of a hole altogether, if there is one it will likely disappear before birth. I've heard numerous ladies on this board told the same thing with the white spot (maybe ask third tri-- some of these ladies might have moved on by now), and not to worry at all.

We have to remember, when they tell us these things, most of the time it's amounting to maybe a half of a percent that something is possibly seriously wrong. In the scheme of things, that is nothing. Try not to worry, and I know how hard that is because I've been there. Also, I am fairly certain that just having one issue (the spot on heart) doesn't mean anything-- it's if they found multiple problems.

Keep us posted but really hang in there- it's going to be completely fine!

  • Everything is going to be fine! It sounds like there are several people that have been through this before and all worked out so there's no reason to get yourself all worked up (which I know is easier to say than go through yourself). I will also keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Stay positive!!

Thank you for taking the time to write this.  I'm trying to stay positive.  The tech sounded concerned but the doc did not.  It sounds like it may be kind of a routine thing.  Like any mom, I just want this baby to be okay!  I'm looking forward to having the level II and finding out exactly what the problem may be.

    Again, thanks <3

  • I'm sorry, that's really scary to hear at an U/S. I have also heard that this is common and usually goes away by delivery, but I would be worried anyway and I'm sure you are. Just keep the faith and hang on until your level II, I'm sure they can answer more questions for you then. Good Luck, I hope all is well.
  • Thoughts and prayers your way that your baby girl is fine and they can get you in soon to ease your mind!
  • Lots of hugs your way, Mrs.Jenni!  I remember you from the Knottie days and are glad to see you on here again!

Same thing happened with us-- the tech was worried and made me even more stressed, and the doctor was much better. At our follow up we had an amazing tech, so that helped a great deal. Please keep us updated after your f/u!

  • I had the same thing, basically what it turned out to be was a "soft marker" for down syndrome. They scanned my little girl for EVERYTHING! Even counting the bones in her little pinky. We totally freaked out too. But it turned out that since it was matched with any other signs of downs, it means we go from a "normal" chance of 1 out of 10,000 to 1 out of 6,000. Which still means we have a 99% chance that our little girl will be born without any complications! I know you'll have the same good news:) Hang in there and remember not to stress:)

I agree with all of the above. The doctors need to protect themself and let you know if they see anything, and investigate it further to be safe. I'm sure your baby girl is just fine!
