2nd Trimester

Question about GD screening ...

Are you supposed to eat before having this test?  My dr didn't give me any instructions either way, so I'm guessing it's not a problem if I eat breakfast first.  Any suggestions on what to eat?  Is protein supposed to give you better results one way or the other?

Re: Question about GD screening ...

  • I was told not to eat anything, not even gum, at least 3 hours before I do the test. All I was allowed was water. I can't say for certain that it is the same with yours, but I don't know why it wouldn't be. Definitely call your doctor's office and ask. You won't want to have to do it again.

  • I would call and ask. I was told nothing with sugar (cookies/donuts/lots of fruit etc) the day before, and to fast after 9pm until after the test was done (could drink water). My sil just had hers done, and didn't fast, and she failed it and now has to do the 3 hour one. I know it's because she ate...and she had sugary stuff the day before.

  • For just the basic test, you're not supposed to do anything different I don't think. I had cereal before mine. My OB did say to watch your sugar intake that morning-- to steer clear of jam or even peanut butter, but thats all she said. After you have the drink, no food is allowed until your blood is drawn.

If they didn't tell you, I imagine they don't want you to fast. GD is fairly serious, so if it were me I'd rather not alter my behavior just to pass.

  • If your doc didn't say anything, then it's likely not a fasting test.  99% of the time, the 1 hour is NOT fasting.

Eat normal.  If you have GD, you'll want to know it.

  • My friend is a nutritionist and he said to fast that whole day, even if your doc says it's ok to eat.  He said a lot of people fail the 1 hour test because they eat something that day.

  • For the one hour test, I didn't have to do anything different.  For the three hour test, I had to fast for 12 hours prior to testing, and was only allowed water during the fast.
  • i had mine this morning and i was told to fast two hours prior to the test and just drink water.. however i chose not to eat anything at all that morning..

  • Ugh, now I'm confused. Even google is confusing me. Some sites say to fast, some say don't...(everyone says fasting for the 3 hour one is necessary though). I wonder why the opinions are so different, you think there would be one way to do it since it is a medical test.

  • Thanks, Ladies!  I guess I'll just eat my normal breakfast since I wasn't given fasting instructions.
  • What the hell?  I had to fast like, forever before I took it with DS and I felt so sh!tty!  lol

Maybe they won't make me this time.....

  • I have mine next week and was instructed to fast. My appointment is at 8am, so I won't eat or drink anything but water before my test. Good luck!
  • i asked my dr about this too.  she said, if it were her, she would fast that morning cause if you fail you have to do the 3 hr one that sucks.  she said she would hate for something i had for breakfast to give it a false postive.  if you have GD, the sugar drink will make your blood sugar go up so fasting wont change that.

she said if i choose to eat, try to make it 2 hrs prior and not something high in carbs.  i think i will just fast cause it's at 9 am and i don't want to do it again :/
