18 wk scan/spot on lo's heart

I had my 18 wk scan on 12/22 and it is a girl!

The tech seen a white spot on her heart and I am following up with a speciaist at 21 wks. It is considered a soft marker for DS. I haven't been worried, until today, because I had the NT scan and everything was ok. I nor DH have a family history of DS. Anyone else experience this (or know someone who did) and have everything to turn out ok? I guess I am looking for a little hope/reassurance.

Also, on a positive note, the neural tube defect blood draw came back good!

Re: 18 wk scan/spot on lo's heart

  • my LO has it too. The specialist said they think it can double risk of DS, but my Dr and the nurse said they see it all the time and think baby will be just fine (we had also done NT scan and it came back negative). I posted awhile ago about it too and lots of ppl (including one of my friends) said their LO had it and baby turned out fine.

  • My SIL's son had the same thing. He was born in October and is perfectly healthy!!!!
  • LO had the same thing. Got sent to a Cardiologist who looked at his heart in any and every way possible, and concluded that it was just a little extra muscle in his heart.

Had an U/S a week ago to make sure baby was head down, and the spot was gone!

I think they tell you things like that just to cover their asses. The High Risk OB that I saw said that only 20% of babies who have the white spot also have DS, and it is only a soft marker! Doesn't mean that anything bad will happen. I also have a family friend who had the same thing, and her DS is almost 3 yrs old and perfectly happy!

  • We had the same thing at our ultrasound.  Its an echogenic intracardiac focus.  It is a soft marker for DS, but our pediatric cardiologist told us that its almost always normal as long as you don't have any other markers.  Sometimes the papillary muscles in the heart just appear brighter for no apparent reason.  I wouldn't worry too much about it (I know its easier said than done), but the Dr. said there's a very low chance of anything abnormal.  GL and prayers are with you!
  • The specialist I saw said 5% of women have this in normal pregnancies and only 7-8% DS babies have it (in addition to other markers). I'm sure our LO's will be ok.

  • Listen to your auntie Heather on this one: it means NOTHING.

They found it on my son's heart 2 years ago and I thought for 5 months he would have Down Syndrome.  Of course he doesn't.

Now they found it on my little girl's heart this time around.

It's an incidental finding, common now because the u/s equipment is so advanced now.  Also, the study that linked it to DS was stupid and recanted because it was done on a population that was high risk for Down Syndrome anyway.

The only reason that they tell you about this finding is because some lawsuit happy jackass will sue them later.

Oh, and it is not a heart defect at all, either.  Don't worry.  Just forget about it.

  • Our son has one too (and a cyst on his brain). (We were already at the geneticst for a family history of spina bifida check) She said because all of our bloodwork was perfect and he has no other markers that it is nothing (the cyst is normal too and should go away by 28 weeks).

She says that they believe that the spots that show up could be genetic now and that you or I could have one on our heart and we just haven't had a ultrasound of our hearts to see. She does not even want to do a follow up.

I would relax and just enjoy your baby!
