Two Under 2

How are you arranging your carseats?

DS#1 is currently rear facing and I'd like to keep him that way for a little while longer.

We haven't tried to put the infant seat in the car yet but I have a feeling that they won't fit side by side.  So which seat should DS#1 go behind? Which seat should DS#2 go behind?   Does it matter from a safety stand point?

TIA

Re: How are you arranging your carseats?

  • I would put the baby behind you and the toddler on the other side as it is easier when you are taking them out.. since if you take the toddler out first you will have to put him down to get the baby out and there is a chance of him running off.. just my opinion..
  • We're putting one on each side, because I don't want my toddler to have the chance to shove a Goldfish cracker down his sister's throat. ?;) ?Right now, DS is behind the driver's seat (RF) but I think we'll move him to the passenger side and keep him RF there, then put the new baby behind the driver's seat. ?I can reach behind my seat at a stoplight or something, but I can't reach over to the passenger side of the back seat. ?I also read something about how there is a slight statistical benefit to keeping the younger baby on the driver's side. ?Something about how in a crash you reflexively protect the side of the car you're on, and obviously a newborn is more fragile than a toddler would be.

  • When we went to get the carseat inspected after it was installed, they told us that LO#1 should go behind the drive and LO#2 should go behind the passanger seat.

I have no idea if it really matters (or if this guy was telling us the truth) but it's what we did and it works for us!

  • We moved DS1 behind the drivers seat, and we have him forward facing because when my DH is driving he needs to be able to put his seat all the way back. We have DS2 behind the passenger seat, again because DH needs to be able to put the seat all the way back when he's driving and the infant seat was too big to allow that.

For us the safety issue was DH not being crunched up against the steering wheel, but if you don't have that problem then I think behind the drivers side is safest and #2 should probably go there.

  • I have the baby behind me and the toddler behind passenger.  I don't think safety-wise it matters but this is the best situation for us.

  • DS(#1) is behind the passenger seat and DD(#2) is in the middle. We have a Ford Explorer and they fit well beside each other. We may have to move DD to the side though because they are starting to fight on our 5 hour drive to visit family. Surprisingly it is DD picking at DS. :)

  • DD is still RFing behind the driver and DS is RFing behind the passenger.  When we move DS into DDs RFing convertible he will be behind the driver and DD will move to FFing behind the passenger.
  • I was just thinking about this. DS is still rear-facing and with any luck he will still be rear-facing when LO#2 is born. Right now he's in the center of the back seat but I'm thinking I will move him behind the passenger side and put the newborn behind the driver. I figure DS will have an easier time seeing me from that side in his mirror and will most likely still need to have things passed to him (like a book or sippy) which would be nearly impossible to do if he was behind me.

  • infant seat will be behind passenger and toddler will be behind the driver. .  due to the fact that DH sits too far back from infant car seat to fit behind him.
