Maternity Photos?

So I've been planning on having a "bump shoot" since I found out I was pregnant.  I even went as far as having our wedding photographer plan on us for March, but now I'm rethinking doing them at all.  I've been looking at other photographers galleries for ideas and a lot of them are pretty graphic-artsy but very naked!  I'm not comfortable with my body now and its just starting to grow, I can only imagine how I'll feel in another couple of months!  I want to have more then just bathroom mirror shots to document the pregnancy but I'm not sure if I can go through with this!  Have any of you seen any maternity shoots where the moms are mostly clothed?  If so, links please!!

Re: Maternity Photos?

  • I do both (I do pics with my photographer friends once a month), you can look at my bump blog and see. I wear a wrap dress cause it's fitting enough to see the bump, looks nice, and you can wear a wrap dress at any size! you should go for it, find a dress that flatters you and your bump and just tell the photographer that you don't want to do the 1/2 naked ones!

  • no links but I plan to do one with a button down dress shirt with the top 2 buttons snapped and the belly completely out.  I got the inspiration from someone who wore a belly shirt in hers that was kinda like a long sleeved bra top with the waist and belly completely out.  Good luck!

  • I haven't seen any. Actually, I've seen very few maternity photos at all. However, just a thought: I  have a friend who takes really nice photos (wanted to go into photography but didnt). I think I might just google maternity photos and find some I like and ask her to take just a few that make me comfortable. I have like...3 or 4 that I know I want done. Only one is naked (its the close up of the hands making the heart on the belly) the others I want to be clothed for. Maybe you know someone who could do them for you and just find a few examples of photos you want?

Plus, I'd bet that you can control how naked they get regardless of the person doing them...just be upfront and specific when you meet with the photographer.

  • My plan is to just take those same beautiful pictures with clothes on :)

  • my cousin went to a park near her home and had a family member take a few pictures of her and then some with her husband. they went online and looked up popular shots she liked (fully clothed :) ) they werent professional but turned out pretty neat!
  • p.s. here's my bump blog link-

Also, the button up shirt is a good idea! I always take a set in the wrap dress, a set wearing one of my SO's dress shirts with it unbuttoned at the belly (dont have those ones on my blog), and a set with a little more skin! G/L!

Thanks!  I love the wrap dress idea and your pics!  A friends sister offered to do a shoot for free since she's just starting her photo biz so maybe I'll do a test run with her before I shell out the big bucks with our photographer.  I'm hoping once I get past this beer gut stage I'll embrace my bump a little more and be willing to show a little more skin!

  • Oh yea,I totally know what you mean! You may have noticed I didn't have the wrap dress ones on there for the first two photo shoots, because it just looked like I had a beer gut! Good luck with your pics, I am sure you won't regret doing them and they will be beautiful!
  • I am no comfortable at all with having my belly out. I am having them done fully clothed and I personally like thoes even better.
  • I sent you a link in a private message :)

  • I was planning on doing some 1/2 clothed or "draped" ones but I've been rethinking that since my body is expanding in ways that I wasn't expecting. Just tell them to do the same shots in fitted clothes :) I'm sure they'll be beautiful either way.

  • I'm not a big fan of the half naked photos either. Just wear a fitted shirt and you'll see the bump in all it's glory. I say have them taken because they are beautiful. Google maternity photos and you'll get lots of ideas for poses and looks.

  • here is a link to a woman who takes maternity pics in NJ . . she is awesome and she has what you are looking for in regards to examples of what you are looking for.
  • Personally, I don't really want maternity photos but I've already talked to my wedding photographer about doing newborn pics when the baby comes. That said, my cousin did maternity pics and they turned out beautiful. She did some with a dress and some with a white button up shirt that was unbuttoned at the stomach so that they could do the tummy pictures. I thought it was really classy.

  • I plan on doing some bare belly shots, but none of the nudie ones, those are kinda weird to me.
