How big is your house?

Square footage-wise. Do you think it's big enough or do you think you're gong to out-grow it quickly? Just wondering...

Re: How big is your house?

  • Mine's 2 bed, 1.5 bath and 1400 sq. ft.  Yep, we'll outgrow it soon, so we are looking around.

  • Big enough for what?  Kids?  Ours is just over 2,400 sq ft & we're outgrowing it.  We have too much stuff though.  We could probably get rid of half the stuff in our house.  ;)  We think we can have 2 kids here, but we are planning on moving anyway because there aren't good school options here.

  • 3 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths for a total of 2014 square feet. Some days I think it's fine and others I think it's too small.

  • Ours is 1,900 sq feet. We will eventually grow out of it and have made plans to move in the next few years but for now, it's perfect of us and little one.

Our backyard has always been a plus for us for the two dogs too and I can imagine our son will love having a swing set back there and room to run around outside safely.

  • 3 bed/1.5 bath/1500 sq feet...but we're hoping to live here at least 5 more years. I figure it's nice & cozy :) Plus I feel that people always think they need a huge house but I don't know if that's necessary. We'll see how it feels in the next few years!
  • I feel stupid but I can never remember the square footage.  Our house is 3 BR, 2.5 bath, plus a loft and a room and a bathroom in the basement.  I think we have plenty of room for one or two kids.  The part I hate about our house is our backyard.  The previous owner put on a beautiful deck, but it takes up pretty much all of the yard.  There is no room for a swing set.  I want a real back yard with a patio instead of a deck.

  • 3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, 1500 sq ft. We'll most definitely outgrow it and plan on moving in 5 years or so.

  • We have a 2 bedroom 1 bath (which only became a problem when m/s hit hard) about 900 sq ft. It will be hard when people come to visit but it works for us and our backyard is 2 lots so it makes up for it.

  • I have no idea what the square footage is of our apartment, but it's a 2-bedroom with a walk-in closet in the master bedroom. With the roommate living here, we're okay but once we add LO into the equation, I think we're going to outgrow it quick.
  • We have a 2 bedroom 1.5 bathroom condo in Brooklyn Heights.  It is about 1,100 square feet, and yes, we have outgrown it.  We are currently looking at houses that are at least 3 bedroom with a full basement and backyard.  Very hard to find the perfect place and still be within a reasonable commute to NYC for my husband.
  • 3 bed, 2 1/2 bath, 2400 sq. feet and 3 stories.  Plenty of room, but our lease is up at the end of next summer and we'll hopefully buy a place of our own.

  • I ask because we put an offer in on a house and it got accepted (yay!) but I just want to make sure that we're not making a mistake here. It's in an amazing neighborhood. It's a townhouse...1600 square feet plus a garage and deck. 3 bedrooms, 2 1/2 bathrooms. Totally in our price range. I've just never made such a big purchase so I'm nervous!
  • 3 br, 3 bath, about 1900-2000 sq. feet (not counting patio or porch space).  I think it is a good size, even for 2 kiddos - we've lived in small (~1000 sq ft) apartments in big cities for a long time so we don't have a ton of stuff.  The layout works for us for several years to come.  However, I can see in 5 years or so needing to move.

  • about 3400 finished square feet- 4 bedrooms, 2.5 baths. we think it is perfect and have decided we will be here a long time! we outgrew our 1800 square foot home within 6 months of dd being born and sold it w.in a year
  • Our apartment is a little over 1,200 sq feet. Considering the baby will have it's own bedroom, bathroom, and walk-in closet, I think it's enough space for the three of us.
  • I think size is relative when it comes to a house and a lot depends on the layout.  We have a 2800 sq ft house with 4 bedrooms and 3 baths.  While I originally thought our house was big our living space (i.e. great room, dinning room & kitchen) are equal in size to our sleeping space (bedrooms). Now that we have a little one on the way I wish I had more living space because all of the babies stuff/toys will mostly be in our great room which is our main room.  I would have rather had smaller bedrooms and maybe a den/bonus room that I could use as a playroom.  Right now we are figuring we will probably have to finish the basement at some point if we don't want our living space to be taken over by kids stuff.
  • I have the smallest house on the bump. whoa is me.... I do love our little cottage tho.

This sounds really familiar, and I realized you're in Colorado too.  Funny.

We have about 1100 sq ft plus some unfinished space in the basement.  2 bedrooms, 1 bath, but we're also on a double lot.  DH and I are in the process of adding a 160 sq ft addition which will be the office so we can move our computers out of the second bedroom (baby's room).

  • Our house is around 1200 square foot.  Three bedrooms and 1 and half bathrooms.  It is way to small for us especially having DD.  We are really having to organize everything to make room for DS.  We can't move for a while due to DH going to school.

We just did this too and are closing on Dec 28!  Congrats!  We're moving out of our 900 sq ft apartment which we were outgrowing very quickly with DS.  The new house is 1900 sq ft of living space - 3 bedroom (+office that doesn't qualify) and 1 bathroom.  We don't know what we're going to do with double the space, but I'm sure we'll outgrow it faster than we think.

  • We're in a 3 bedroom, 1.5 bath house with a sun room.  I have no idea what the square footage is.  It feels roomy enough for the three of us, and very comfortable for four.  HTH
  • We just built our house over the summer. It is 3 bedroom, 2 baths, and 1283 sq ft. The basement is the entire square footage of the house, so we are planning on finishing that and putting a tv and play space down there at some point. We also have the set up for a bathroom down there. We also have a huge back yard. This is going to be our last child and we have a miniature schnauzer, so I think we will be just fine here.

  • Ours is about 1400 sq ft.  I think it's okay for now, but in a few years we're (hoping) to try to have our second baby and at that point we'll probably be looking at a larger house!

  • 3800 sq ft.  four bedroom (with all bdr on the same floor), 3 and 1/2 baths.  Don't think we'll outgrow it anytime soon, that's why we bought it!

  • 2800sf.  We were in an 1800sf house when we had ds and moved over the summer in preparation for the second.

ETA: it was mostly the layout(not just size) that made us outgrow it.  The 3rd bedroom was way too far away to put a small child in and the living space was really broken up.

  • DH and I just bought a 2500 sq ft 4 bed 2.5 bath house.  The week before we closed we found out we were pregnant!  Worked out well.  Now we have a master bedroom that's huge, office, guest room, and nursery.  I haven't even started the nursery yet though...it's very empty.

I think it is perfect for us.  We also have three dogs so we need the room, especially our big backyard.  And thank god for dog doors!

  • 1st house-1500sq ft, 2nd house-2800, 3rd house (one we are in now)-2200 sqft...and it's just right. Not too crowded but not too much to clean!

  • Ours is 2000 sq ft but it seems smaller than it is. It's a 60s ranch and 1000 of the sq feet is an addition that contains our master suite and a living room. The original part of the house is tiny and has NO storage. I'm going crazy trying to get rid of tons of crap before Addy is here.

  • Our house is 1500 square foot. I think it will be perfect for the three us. Having four people would be a little cozy but still very possible.

I really think that we as a society are very spoiled. Don't get me wrong I love the finer things and have way more crap then I need but really I don't think people grown out of their houses (for the most part).

I think that people acquire a lot of crap they just don't need. If you look at everything in your house how much of that stuff do you really NEED? Do you really need a 50inch T.V? No.

  • think it's 2900'ish. we bought it when we got married which was in april. We got it thinking about kids. So it better be enough room!
  • Our current apartment is only 1800 Sq. Ft.

And for some that works but with both my roommate (and her BF who practically lives here), my DF, and me, it doesnt work.

We were moving out anyway and this pushed that along. Our new place is much bigger and it is going to work so well with the twins! I am so excited to move!

  • 2700 square feet, (800 of it is an unfinished basement) 3 bedrooms. Think it will be okay for the next couple years or so
  • The house we are hopefully buying (gotta love a short sale) is 2000 finished square feet, with 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths and a loft. There's another 1000 unfinished sq ft in the basement which we plan on finishing out. If it weren't for the basement I think we'd outgrow it pretty quickly, but having the space to expand makes it so much better. We're hoping to stay in this house for 10-12 years.

  • ours is about 1300 square feet, 3 bedrooms and one SMALL bathroom.  It's fine for now, the lot size and location are perfect because we're on the corner and right next to a park.  it's small, but i've found it very therapeutic to throw stuff.give stuff away to make room for the baby.  i feel like every square inch is useful right now and that's perfect.  if and when we have another baby, we may need to move, and that new home will have a second bathroom!

your new house sounds like the perfect size for a new family!  congratulations, buying your first home is an awesome experience!

  • Haha we live in an apartment and it's a 2 bedroom, 1 bath 870 sq feet. We will be moving soon after the baby to wherever the Navy feels the need and who knows how much room we will have then.

  • we have a three bedroom, 2.5 bath house.  1390 sq feet.  it's cozy, but it will be good for the next year or two.  my brother lives with us, so when the baby comes, Charlie and baby will "share" a room.  but not really, bc we will co-sleep until at least 6 months, more likely 9.  Our next house will be at least 4 bedrooms and 2000 sq feet, but really, all a baby needs is a place to sleep.  you just don't *need* everything you *want* for your kid, KWIM?  we make it work, and our parents made it work in much smaller space!

and, FTR, i think your new place sounds perfect!  i don't think you will need more space for awhile.  congrats on the new house!

  • Right now, we're in a 1 bed/1bath that's about 850 sq ft - the roominess of downtown urban highrise living. But we're moving in few months to a 4 bed/3.5 bath suburban house we bought that's about 3750 sq ft. We'll definitely have more than enough to grow into.
  • 1900 square feet, 3 bedrooms and 2 bathroom.  I think it's a great size for us.
  • We just bought a 3 BR, 2.5 Ba, 2200 sf house. The layout is pretty wonky, so in a way it feels smaller than our 1700 sf (2 BR, 1 BA) rental. I don't think we'll necessarily "outgrow" the house, because the square footage is fine. We just might outgrow the layout.
