2nd Trimester

Cyst in baby's head

SO my big US was today and they said everything looked fine...except there is a tiny cyst in the baby's head.... the doc said its nothing to worry about and that it should go away in a few months....  I will have to get another US in a few months to see if the cyst is still there.

Has this happened to anyone????    they keep saying I shouldnt worry....but how can I not???

Re: Cyst in baby's head

  • My friend's baby had cysts, and they did go away.  The baby is completely healthy!

  • I'm  a NICU nurse.  These cysts are normal until 28 weeks as the brain develops.  The cysts are normal in fetal development.  I wouldn't worry (I know easier said than done), but I know many people this has happened to.  I'm sure that doesn't make you not worry, but I hope it makes you feel a little better.

  • Yes, my son had those around 19 weeks on his brain, and they were gone by the level II ultrasound at 22 weeks.

Nothing at all to worry about, they are just a soft marker in case they find other things, but if that's all they said, then your child is fine. :)

  • They are called Choroid plexus cysts.....
  • My niece had cysts and they also went away. She is a helthy little girl now.

  • This is one of those situations where it would be a good idea for you to Google it. I promise it'll make you feel better. I am a worrier by nature, and my baby has this, but after googling and seeing that a choroid plexus cyst on its own (with no other birth defects or markers for problems) almost always turns out to be nothing, I am just not concerned about it. I know many other people who have had this and their babies were all fine and the cyst was gone by 28 weeks.
She's crafty - and she's just my type.
  • We had our big u/s at about 19 weeks and my little girl has two of them. As scary as it is (and believe me, I cried and cried for two days because I was so worried/scared) all of the people that I have talked to have had their little ones turn out just fine.  We were sent to have a Level 2 u/s done abt. a week later and everything else is measuring just fine. We will have another u/s at around 32 weeks to make sure they are gone. And my friend is a PT that works in a NICU and she said that even babies that are born with them are still just fine. So as hard as it is, I'm trying to breathe and just pray that all will be okay. ((hugs)) Thoughts and prayers for you and your little one!
  •  This-Our friends baby also had a cysts but it went away and he is a normal healthy toddler!

  • My SIL was told her baby had a cyst on her brain during an u/s. She was born perfectly healthy and is now 2 years old and absolutely perfect. Don't worry! :)
  • We had our big U/S today and they found one on our baby too. (and it's a boy!) We were at the geneticist anyway for a spina bifida screen so we had the best of the best. She said it could be a marker for trisomy 18 IF we had any other makers (most are physical deformities) and the baby had none! So she said it should go away before birth and to not even worry about it.?

    Yeah for your boy!!!!!!!?

  • We're in the same boat except I just had my second u/s today to retake measurements.  I was doing really well not worrying about it but some days it is hard.  We meet with the dr tomorrow for the first time since the "big" u/s and I'm kind of anxious about it.  All other measurements look great and I know the chances are slim but some days it is still hard not to worry.

I had the same deal, We found them at 19 weeks, He had more than 5 CPC's I was very scared! by week 29 they were ALL gone! i wrote about it in my blog if you need more info. but rest assure, the outcome will be ok!

  • I completely understand! They found one at my 19 week U/S and I actually have a level 2 ultrasound tomorrow to check for any further defects that could indicate that something else is wrong. Everything I have read and heard from everyone has been very reassuring, but it is still really hard not to be anxious!
  • Thank you everyone....

I do feel alot better knowing I am not alone and it seems like everyone is fine

I am looking forward to my friday appointment to chat with my Doc about it! in the mean time... i will try and relax...
