Leather or fabric family room furniture?

What do you have?  Do you like it?  If you were buying new, what would you buy?

I have read that leather lasts a lot longer and is much more durable and better for kids.  We have picked out a leather set at Thomasville and the leather seems really good and able to hold up to kids and dog, but now I am having second thoughts and wonder if fabric would be more comfortable.  I couldn't sleep last night and spent the night on our couch and I wonder if the leather one would have been as warm and cozy...

 Any thoughts or advice?

This is the set we are considering: https://www.thomasville.com/Furniture/Living-Room-Furniture/Leather-Choices/i304328-Benjamin-3-Seat-Sofa.aspx

Re: Leather or fabric family room furniture?

  • Leather, hands down.

I can wipe it off when Jackson spills something - I can't do that with fabric.

  • We have leather and love it.

I will never buy a non leather couch while the kids are young! It cleans up so easily. I will say it is a little chilly but we have some nice throws to help out!

  • my former inlaws have leather in the family room and its very comfortable and very durable....its held up to 2 dogs and numerous kids of all ages.

This is what we are getting if we are ever able to afford new furniture.

  • I made a HUGE misake in buying fabric - even if it's scotchguarded.  We shouldhve bought the leather.  Easier to maintain.  We're in Florida so the leather would be more climate practical too.

  • We bought leather lazyboy furniture right after ds was born. It was one of the best investments we have made. It is so durable and much easier to clean than cloth.
  • Leather.

We have fabric. :(  The kids haven'tt damaged it yet, but I am a nervous wreck around it.  We decided to splurge on nice furniture when we moved and what a mistake.  I have a $3k chair that I am a tyrant with when the kids go near it.  I hate having to be so uptight about it.

  • Thanks for the input ladies!  If you went with leather, where did you buy it?  Is it aniline or semi-aniline (or something else)?

  • LEATHER!!!

Ours is brown and looks really cool as it gets a bit distressed- that's why we bought it b/c it was suppose to wear nicely, and it does :)

  • well, I guess I'm in the minority here.    we have a fabric couch and a leather club chair and ottoman both from bassett... the chair and ottoman cost more than the couch (~ $1K).  the chair and ottoman shows any scratches from toys, I have to oil it periodically... and I found something dried onto it and it was a pain  to get off...  the couch, I steam clean periodically. I have a carpet cleaner with an attachment for furniture.   and I vacuum it weekly (well, that's the goal).  We've had both since long before the babies and they've held up fine.  check with the sales person on type of leather and  cleaning the leather, we had very specific instructions to protect the leather.  I like them both fine... but either way, it's maintanence.  if you prefer the leather look, go for it.  just make sure it's good quality.  my dad had a leather recliner back in the day that got all wrinkly looking... looked aweful.  I prefer a cloth couch to lie on.
  • actually our couch looks a lot like that one, only fabric. lol.
  • Ours is from Crate and Barrel. It's the espresso colored, "Axis" sectional. It has held up really well.
