Anyone have heart palpitations?

I've told my doctor, but they're getting really annoying.  Is anyone else experiencing them?

Mine only last for a few seconds at a time, but always make me stop and catch my breath.

Re: Anyone have heart palpitations?

  • i've had them on and off for years so if i'm having them right now i honestly couldn't tell you, i don't even notice them really anymore.

  • i do! i actually have an appt with the cardiologist next week because last year i had mono related tachycardia...so they're worried that i may have it again...
  • I have a heart murmur.  My doctor said it's common during pregnancy because your heart is pumping so much extra blood.  He doesn't know if I had it before or if it's just a symptom of being pregnant since he wasn't treating me before but he said he'd monitor it after LO is born.

He said it's nothing to worry about, though, so I haven't worried.

  • I've been having them ever since around 8 weeks or so.  They were so bad i went to the hospital because i really thought something was wrong with me.  Basically, after a normal ekg, they told me that its normal to get palps.during pregnancy especially early preg. because your blood flow is  much different and accelerated.

the only thing that seemed to help me was time and eating a little more red meat and high iron foods.

Thanks for the reassurance.  I do know that it's from having a higher blood volume, but it seems like a minor annoyance.

Good idea about the iron thing - I'm a veg, so I don't eat red meat, but I'll ask my dr at my next appt (Tues) if he thinks that would help.

I used to get them very occasionally, but now it's a couple of times a day.

I don't know what that is, but I hope everything works out for you!

mine are/were related to graves' disease/hyperthyroidism, so i had them pretty much all the time and it just got to a point where i just got used to it and didn't notice them anymore.  i'm not hyper- anymore but it seems that's one lovely symptom that never totally went away.  (I was on beta-blockers for 2-3 years because of them and other symptoms as well)

  • I'm so glad you asked this, I was beginning to think I was crazy!  I used to have them like once every ten days, but lately I've had them a few times a day.  The other night, I swear I had three or four in two hours and it was completely freaking me out!  If any of you find out more info, would you mind coming back to this thread to post your results?
  • I guess you can call what my heart does palpitations. I never thought about it. I'll be sitting on the sofa and then it'll feel like my heart paused for one second and then it'd beat really weird like it was trying to catch up to it's normal beat again. It's weird.
  • Yes, I have them! Have had them since very early on, and I have them all day long. I'll have about 4-8 regular beats and then what feels like a skipped beat, then a big thump. I went to the cardiologist and he said that because my heart is dealing with so much blood now it will occasionally "forget" to release blood (which is when I feel the "skipped beat") When my blood is released a second or two later is when I feel the big thump, because of all the blood that has accumulated.

In short it is very uncomfortable and annoying but pretty harmless as long as you do not have fainting spells. The doc says it should go away shortly after the birth, thank goodness!

Very interesting what someone said about iron... maybe that's why I crave red meat all the time!
