High-Risk Pregnancy

how long after your cerclage removal did you give birth?

I know everyone is different, but I am trying to figure out if most people give birth the same day.  I am 1 cm dialated and they are taking the stitches out next Tuesday.  I am very stressed trying to finish up my last week of work and get everything finalized for the baby.  I don't even have my bag packed!

Re: how long after your cerclage removal did you give birth?

  • I've had 3 cerclage pregnancies:

with my first I gave birth about a week later, my second about 2 weeks, and with my third I gave birth the day they took out the stitch.

  • According to the research studies I've read on it (i'm a researcher so that's where I went to look when my doctor told me about the cerclage), 50% of births occur 2 weeks after cerclage removal, only 14% give birth within 48 hours. They didn't break it out by preventive or emergency cerclages.

If you're worried about work, can you ask them to leave it in for another few days?

  • With DS, I had my cerclage removed at 37 weeks and I was NOTHING. I went back the next week and I was only 1 cm dilated. I had DS 4 days later:)
  • My last two cerclages were removed at 35 weeks and I gave birth a week later.....my most recent was 8# so I'm hoping that this baby isn't a chunker at 36 weeks! I can't imagine going longer!

    Good luck!

  • I think alot of it has to do with PTL as well.  For me, I stopped meds at 34w, stitch was to come out at 36w.  Well, 34w1d, I went into labor again, stitch came out that night, and after the first shot didn't work, whatever happened was going to happen.  I ended up stalling after I got my epi and went on to be induced at 38w, after walking around 3-4cm dilated for almost a month.
