Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Medication after a missed m/c?

So, this will be my second m/c in six months.  I went last Monday and found out that the embryo was not viable anymore and that there just wasn't anything in my uterus but a yolk sack.  After getting through that, I was prescribed Misoprostol instead of getting a D & C.  Has anyone used this before?  I just took my first dose tonight and I am wondering what to expect in the next few days.  I really am not excited about having to go to school (I am a teacher) with tons of discomfort, but for those of you who are teachers you know that it would really be easier than getting a sub.  Anyway, any thoughts on this drug would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Medication after a missed m/c?

  • I took misoprostal for a miscarriage at 10w5d.  The gestational sac measured 9 w and there was no fetus.  I took the drugs (vaginally) at 3 pm, passed everything at 3 a.m. and felt good enough to teach the next day.

I hope it works as effectively for you as it did for me.  It was fast and fairly uneventful.

  • I was prescribed medication for my first missed m/c.  I hated it.  They inserted 6 pills behind my cervix, and told me the bleeding would start within 24 hours.  It started within an hour.  I bled and passed tisuse for about 4 weeks.  I had severe cramps, like doubling over cramps.  I was given Percocet, but it didn't do much for me.  I hope you have a different experience, but I would consider taking a few days off work if I were you.

  • I took Misoprostol also. I took it at 8 pm and it started working around 5 am. I stayed home from work because I didn't know what to expect. I am glad that I did because the cramps were horrible. I had never experienced pain like that. Also by 10 am, I was gushing blood and had to to go to the ER. It's different for every person, but I would recommend staying home if you can.

I had a natural miscarriage that didn't complete, and my RE let me try the miso first (he wanted to do a D&C, but was ok with meds).  I took the pill orally, and within 8 hrs had severe cramping.  Within 12hrs I had passed the majority of the tissue and some pretty big clots, and I felt awful.  I took the med in the early evening, and couldn't work the next day.  I was pretty useless the day after that because I cramped every time I got up to walk around.  I also bled for about a week and a half straight, and ended up bleeding a grand total of 23 of the first 30 days of my m/c cycle.  By the end of it, I wished I had just gotten the D&C done and taken my chances with my allergies. :(
