Can I start with bananas?

I started him on a little bit of rice cereal last night and he was pretty ok with it and ate a few spoonfuls. One of my friends said her LO started on rice mixed with a little banana and she said he loved it. Is it ok to start with a rice/banana mix or should I just stick to only rice for the first few weeks?

Re: Can I start with bananas?

  • I don't see any problem with it, but I'm pretty liberal when it comes to such things.  My pedi told me to wait 3 days or so in between items so you know what it is if he has a reaction, but I'm not sure if that holds for cereal (which I'm skipping, anyway).

  • I was always told to introduce one thing at a time and ot have another new thing for 3-4 days.  The reason for that is so that if they have a reaction you'll know exactly which food they reacted to.  Rice and bananas are fairly non reactive foods, but I would still wait a few days after introducing the first before adding the other.

this! I think you better wait a few days

  • We did 3 days of rice then introduced bananas after that.
  • I also read not to start fruit too early or LO develops a sweet tooth (doesn't want to eat non-sweet things after that). It said to start with rice cereal and then vegetables, to go later with fruit because of this. I don't know how old your LO is though.
