We just got back from the doctor and found out that DS's eardrum ruptured. the flaps are already closed up, which is a good sign. I asked about future hearing loss and the pedi said that hearing loss is related to having persistent infection and not related to having an eardrum rupture. This is his second ear infection. I'm still a little concerned. Anyone have any ruptured eardrum stories and what they were told by your DC's pedi?
Thanks!!!
Re: Anyone's DC have a ruptured eardrum?
yep, 3x's actually. When B was a baby she'd have no signs of even an infection and bam, straight to ruptures. She had 3 ruptures before she was one. From one to two, she had 3 more infections.
Her last hearing test was in August and her hearing is at 100%
MIne ruptured (didn't take care of myself, my stress level, and a bad cold turned awful.) It was honestly the only time I've considered suicide it was THAT PAINFUL (I had tow drug free deliveries, since then.)
I had NO hearing for 2 solid weeks and I had blood and puss dripping out of that ear for 4 days.
The hearing did return. I've had a ton of ear problems as a kid and had 8-9 ear tube surgeries by the time I was 8. All that left me with a little bit of hearing damage but mostly on the left ear, and mostly sounds I wouldn't "miss" because they're some odd tone that who cares...
I'm a walking disaster with ears! I hope your dc didn't go through as much pain as I did. I fantasized about smashing my head into a cement wall to help with the pain.
The only GOOD news about the whole thing was I learned to TAKE EFFING CARE OF MYSELF and ever since then (10 years ago) I have no problem taking sick time from work.
As long as they aren't having repeated ruptures, there is no concern about hearing difficulties. When DD's eardrum ruptured with her 1st ear infection, her doctor was like, "well, that's a good way to treat it!" What he meant was that when it ruptures, it actually gives them instant relief of their pain and allows the infection to drain out (which is essentially what tubes do).
Apparently DD's infection was pretty bad because not only did her ear drum rupture, it also totally affected her balance.....the poor thing could not even walk straight and kept running into things, which made her even more miserable!
DD's eardrum ruptured when she had an ear infection. She's actually had 5 ear infections so we've seen an ENT and she's scheduled for tubes on 12/23.
The rupture occurred about 2 weeks before we saw the ENT. At that point it was healed and everything looked great. They did a hearing test and her hearing was perfect. The ENT told me that repeated ruptures cause scar tissue and the scar tissue is what causes hearing loss. Repeated ear infections can also cause scar tissue.
