How did you know when you son was ready to go thru the night w/o diapers?

Tyler is 4 and still wears them at night.  He pees through some nights- in a stage 6 huggies, but he is such a sound sleeper, I don't think he'd be able to get up in the night to go pee.  What age did your son start and how did you make the transition?

  • My DS is 4 and we got rid of the diapers about two months ago.  He was soaking through diapers and I thought he wouldn't ever stay dry at night.  I decided to give it a try though, the first few nights I woke up and took him to the bathroom a few times each night.  After that he started waking up to go on his own and he has just started sleeping all night without needing to get up at all.  I take him right before I go to bed each night.

I wouldn't worry if your son isn't ready though.

  • DS insisted on wearing underwear to bed 2 weeks after we started PTing. I was really hesitant, but he woke up dry. He occasionally has accidents at night still (he's been PTed for over 6 months now), but mostly stays dry (I'd say 99% of the time he's dry in the morning).

I wouldn't rush it if I were you, though. Nighttime isn't something that you can train for, and I think people say not to worry about nighttime accidents until around 6 years old.

This. DD has been potty trained for over a year now. She wakes up wet about 95% of the time. In that past year, she has woken up once to go to the bathroom (and that was a couple days ago). I'll start to worry when I can no longer find pull ups that fit.

  • We stopped all diapers right before DS turned 3 (day and night) and he only had one nighttime accident.  I recommend just cutting it.  IMO, the longer go go with him not learning to go potty if he needs to at night, the harder it will be.
