Taking Birth Control while breastfeeding?

My DS is almost 8 weeks old and my OB just gave me a prescription for birth control. When reading the warnings though I saw that it says the drug will come out in breast milk. My doctor never mentioned any concerns so I assume he is ok with me taking it. Have any of you run into this concern?

  • I think the only birth control that is safe while BF is the mini pill.  If you have a prescription for something else, I would verify with the doc first.

  • I read that the regular pill can decrease your milk supply.  I would definitely talk to your doctor.  I was told the mini pill is safe.

  • I am on the mini pill. Hasn't hurt my milk supply, I think only the regular hormone pill does that.

  • Only BC pills with estrogen in them cause BF problems.  Did your OB know you were nursing or even ask?  Mine asked and then prescribed the "mini" pill.

  • Other thing to make sure you are aware of is that you take the mini pill at the exact same time every day. There is a much better likelihood of getting pregnant on the mini pill than the regular pill. I sucked taking the pill in general so I got an IUD instead.
