Is that misspelled or is it really Cortlandt? ?I've never seen the name before but it seems like it will be a nightmare to have spelled correctly with the 't' on the end. ?
Just curious. ?

So when his name gets shortened as many kids names of that length do, his name will be Cort Flake?
Too funny.
So is the first name supposed to be Courtland, but you are putting a "t" on it just because? I'm not trying to be rude, I just really don't get the name spelling.

Congratulations but ditto the other posters on the spelling. I worked with a guy named "Cortlan" and no one could ever get the spelling right on that either.

Cortlandt is the name of a town, not really a first name imo. ?I do like Isaiah. I also don't mind a shorter version Cort with Flake as a last name--- not sure why others have a problem with your last name, that is pretty rude.

I don't think it's the last name people have issues with. It's the combo of the shortened name with the last name. It sounds very similar to "corn flake." I believe that is the issue.

It's the traditional English spelling, right? It's not like she added a "t" at the end to be cool...
And why make fun of someone's last name? They can't help it. Sorry, just felt the need to defend (even though I wouldn't pick that name combo myself)
Thank you for not being a b!tch!!! I'm not one to be rude on here I usually just lurk on here but this is our name choice and although I did post and was prepared for peoples response I think it is quite rude to judge someones name that you know nothing about. As I stated in the other post it is a family name and 3 people have lived with the spelling and have been just fine. It will not be shortened and everyone around us knows that so we aren't concerned with "Cort Flake" or any other shortening. We didn't want our child to be named Michael, John, David or any other common name for that matter (no offense to people who have named their children that but it's just not our style) we are choosing to honor our family and use thier name!
Well by the time he is old enough to be in school he can decide if he wants it shortened. It's not like a kid is going to say "Hey Cort Flake" lol I'm sure he would just say "Hey Cort" Thank you for your input though

Once they realize his name is Cort and last name is Flake, you can bet your ass they will. Kids aren't as stupid as you are trying to make them seem.
I'm not trying to make them seem stupid...yes kids are mean but I think our kid will be able to handle it...there are a lot more unique names out there than Cortlandt!

Yes, and I feel sorry for those children.
Their parents didn't consider how they would have to deal with growing up with a name that causes teasing/confusion ona regular basis.

As I stated before if he really hates his name that much he can change it when he turns 18! Now I really think it's time to stop beating a dead horse! No one here likes our name fine by us...AGAIN I was just stating that we had decided on our name NOT asking for advice or opinions!
I have a "family name" - Kittie. And as a result, I was called "Kittie Litter" for the duration of 2nd grade by the mean little boys. I cried EVERY DAY after school. It sucked hardcore. I begged my parents to let me go by my middle name every time I changed schools (we moved a lot). They wouldn't let me, and I bawled.
Now, I like my name. But I still get "Here, Kittie, Kittie, Kittie". Plus I work at a vet's office. You do the math.
Cort Flake would definitely make me think twice. My parents tried to think of everything I could be called, but never imagined Kittie Litter. At least you have the benefit of foresight.
Alright. I get that people aren't a big fan of Cortlandt. You don't have to love everyone's baby name that comes along. But to judge someone's last name? Absurd. My last name is Borsack. Yep, I fell in love with someone with a horrible last name. Flame away.

Use it.
Oh I've thought about it...we actually joked (as does everyone who marries and has a child with a "Flake" male) that we were going to name him Cornielus (sp) so WE could call him Corn Flake. It's something that comes with the last name!!
I actually don't mind the name Cortlandt, particularly since it is a family name and meaningful to you. I actually think Cort is a cute name for a boy... it reminds me of one of my favorite childhood movies "The Man in the Moon".
That being said, to put your head in the sand about the "Cort Flake" thing is really mean. I am a school counselor and work with bullied/angry/hurt kids all day long. You are literally setting your kid up for issues. You say he can "handle it".... how are you so sure that your unborn child will be able to handle that? Kids aren't mature or able to embrace the tradition when they are 12 and getting made fun of. It hurts them and we as parents need to protect our kids from that.
PLEASE think this through. While I understand wanting to honor family, there needs to be limits to how far we will go before we say "damn.. I guess this won't work". Cort Flake is not something that you should strap your child to. It is like my friend who married a guy whose last name is Allison. Her mom and grandma's first name is Alison and she had ALWAYS wanted to use it... but obviously Alison Allison wasn't going to work. I know that is an extreme example but just one of the ways that life throws us a curveball and we can't use family names we want to 100% of the time.
PLEASE PLEASE think about this. It is a fine name - but not with your married name. It really isn't.
Cortlandt is not my style at all, but it's not my place to slam this mom and dad for their choice. She has previously stated that it's a family name and no matter what others say, they are still using it. It's not their fault that their last name is "Flake" either. I never would have come up with some of the so called nick names that others have come up with though. I am not a fan of nick names so I tend not to try and think of them. And in regards to the spelling of the name...it's a real spelling. It's not something they just pulled out of their a** for the heck of it. It is a variant of Courtland and means "land of the court". It may not be popular by any means but it is a real name and a real spelling.

Well it comes from his side of the family so the 3 other generations that have it all had the last name Flake and survived! lol I posted on here celebrating our name and that is what we are doing. We (our family and friends included) love the name and that's all that matters! Thank you for your input though!

She was only pointing out the name being an issue down the road. And being a former teacher, I have to agree.
DING DING DING we have a winner!
