(Baby food) The difference between 1st stage and 2nd stage

What is the difference between 1st stage baby food and 2nd stage? How do you know when to move up?

TIA

We are moving up at 6-7 months.  The difference is it isn't pureed.  It's a little thicker.  The 3rd stage has chunks .. made for chewing.

Gerber uses the descriptions of stage 1 for supported sitter and stage 2 for sitter. The difference is the texture and how easy to swallow it is. I plan on making my own, so I'm not sure how to swing the stages yet.

I make my own food too. I am not sure what stage I should get while on vacation. I make it sort of thick, and it is hard to take all texture out with the food processor.

its supposed to be texture but i really dont see a difference. and IMO, oatmeal is way thicker than the 2nd foods veggies. 2nd foods are recommended for sitters i think, so im assuming 6 months or so. we use them now sometime..we're rebels ;)
