Epidural before an induction?

Has anyone ever heard of the doctor giving an epidural before starting an induction? I was induced with my second DD & they wouldn't even consider giving me an epidural until I could take no more. I asked for one as soon as I started feeling pain & the nurse laughed at me & told me I was sleeping thru the pain so I must not need it. If anyone knows if this is possible please let me know so I can schedule mine now!!!

Re: Epidural before an induction?

  • No, they typically have you get to a certain point with dilation. But, check with your doctor.

  • Drs want you to have some progress before you get an epidural because the epi can cause labor to slow at times.  Why would you want an epi before it starts to really hurt?

  • Epidurals can really slow down labor in some women - so the chances of you doctor being willing to do this are probably slim.  You don't want the epidural and the pitocin battling with each other - ultimately that would create a much more stressful labor for LO!

I read in WTEWYE that this is a big fat myth.  Studies indicate that an epi has no effect on the progress of labor.

  • This is exactly what I thought. The girl also thinks she is going to be induced at the first sign of activity in her cervix because she thinks her labor will be so fast the baby will be born on the side of the highway.Confused

I have also heard that this is a myth, but I can't see a doctor giving an epidural before labor starts.

American pregnancy says it can slow labor, https://www.americanpregnancy.org/labornbirth/epidural.html

The UNC also says it can slow labor but it also varies at what stage in labor you are in.

Every woman is different with every pregancy, but it seems that the mojority of sources I have seen say that it can slow the progress, especially if you are in early labor, or are not even in labor and are just starting an induction with pitocin.

  • They want you to wait for a certain point b/c if your progress takes too long, the epi could wear off before you REALLY need it and it could be too late to re-administer it.

  • Yeah I kinda thought the chick was full of it. She has been trying to one up me for days now. I'm due January 10th & she is due February 19th & she is positive her baby is coming before mine. I just grin & bare it.

She switched to my doctor with this pregancy & I guess she thought that I would be upset that she was going to get an epidural as soon as she walked thru the door at the hospital & I will just have to suffer.

I know this is totally off point, but why in the world, would anyone want  their baby to come 4 weeks early?

I have wondered the samething. She has already told me of how her other 2 had problems when they were born. I would be trying to hold this baby in as long as possible.
