Gentian violet for thrush

This stuff is messy! It stains your skin and LO's skin. When DS is on my breast, he will have the purple dye all over his cheeks and chin! It is impossible to wipe off. And the creepiest part is that pumped breast milk is lavendar colored! That's because the dye is on the nipple and the milk is passing through the dye.  I can't wait until this treatment is over.

Have any of you experienced this?

I am an audiologist and our doctors use gentian violet all the time for various ear infections. It is very messy and a little creepy due to its vibrant hue. Alcohol swabs will usually wipe it away from the skin and other surfaces, that's what we use in the office when it gets everywhere. Hang in there, it usually works very well so hopefully not too much longer will you have to deal.

It works great and it will fade away in just a few short days. I remember keeping my DS inside our house for those few days and thinking that someone might call the authorities on me if they saw my DS out in public with purple smeared all over his mouth and face!

Yes, haha!  We just did 4 days of it, and this was from our first day.  What a frickin' mess!  He doesn't have any signs of thrush in his mouth, so after that first night I just did my nipples and figured he'd get enough from nursing - his mouth would still be purple inside afterwards.  I'd nurse him first at bed and then do my nipples so less got on him.  Also coat their mouth area in lanolin before you nurse to reduce staining.  I did feel a lot better after 4 days but not totally so they just put me on a 2 week course of diflucan.  Good luck, thrush is a b!tch!

Oh, poor baby with the purple face!!  Thanks for the advice on the lanolin.  I'm on a 3 week course of diflucan (after taking it for 10 days last month)...I hope this kicks the thrush once and for all.

 Also, thanks to the audiologist about alcohol swabs...I'll try that.
