Parenting after a Loss

Ok - how many receiving blankets do you really need?

Hi ladies! I hope to be joining you over here sometime within the next 5 weeks! ;)

I just wanted to ask about blankets because I had my 2 showers this weekend (and still have a work shower coming up!) and mostly received registry gifts, which was great....but I think I have more blankets than I know what to do with! (and of course, no gift receipts for most)

If we can't return any I will probably just donate some to our church, but how many do you seriously need???

Re: Ok - how many receiving blankets do you really need?

  • We never really used any receiving blankets - and have about 15!  They are too small to use for swaddling.  We used about 4 swaddling blankets.  Stroller blankets are great....we have about 6 of those.

  • You probably have more than you need - but I actually ended up needing more than I thought I would.  I used them to put over my lap and shoulder when feeding (DS had reflux - so we dirtied alot of blankets during feeding sessions).  I kept a few in the den so I could just lay one out over the couch or rug if I needed to do a diaper change and didn't want to go to the nursery. I kept an extra one in each car and always had one in the diaper bag for public diaper changes.  Plus, he was a spring baby so they were a nice lighter alternative for going on walks or going outside.  I would say just hang on to everything for now and see how many you use, how often you end up doing laundry and donate what you find you aren't using.

  • we have about 12, and i never used 1.  i packed them up with her 0-3 month clothes, i probably should have gotten rid of them...

  • If you don't have many burp cloths you could use them for that. I would say a handful is plenty 4-6 (but I have plenty of everything). BTW we hardly used them & we only used them during the first 8 weeks I'd say.

  • We still use one or two per day. I also keep one in each diaper bag. Like pp we dealt with reflux and spitting up and used them for burp cloths. They are bigger and work much better than the skinny kind of burp cloths. HTH!

  • We received about 10 rec'ing blankets and IMO unless you're planning to swaddle, you won't need many.

We used far more regular blankets than we did rec'ing blankets. But Meredith was never swaddled.

ETA: I used gerber cloth diapers for burp cloths & still use those for mouth wipes & nose wipes.

  • I don't know the answer to this... all I can tell you is that I have WAY too many!!!!!

I suppose I would keep them if you don't have receipts, or maybe just return the ones you do have receipts for?

  • I never thought to use all my extra blankets for burp cloths! We have so many and Owen has reflux and is constantly soaking our actual burp cloths!

    Thanks ladies!!!!

  • I have a zillion.. but i hardly use them. You can't really swaddle well with them.. they're too small.. we just used the swaddle-me's for that..

I do usually throw one in the diaper bag.. to use if we get caught in the rain, or to block the sun in her eyes on a walk or something.. or sometimes it gets used as a burp cloth..and they were sometimes used in the summer time for a blanket if it was a little cooler.

  • We got a million too.  We rarely use any receiving blankets, but keep some stashed in the diaper bag.  They don't take up much space.  You may want donate to a local NICU as well.  They may work to swaddle there since the babies are tiny.
  • i used tons and tons of these (brought them into the NICU for her & then use them alot at home still & she is almost 10 pounds now).  she needs to be swaddled to sleep so we use them for that, to put in her stroller, etc.  i like the idea of donating them to your nicu!
  • We use all of her blankets...all of the time. Like PP said, we use them to change her on, wipe spit up, lay on the couch under her, cover the stroller, etc. You won't want to be doing laundry everyday so you might wait to see if you use them before giving them away.
