2nd Trimester

Anyone prescribed Bactrim DS for UTI? Concerned...

I do indeed have a UTI and the doctor I used to go to called in a script for Bactrim DS since my midwife is not in the office today. This med is a schedule C and some of the stuff I've read says NOT to take and other stuff says to discuss the benefits/risks w/your doctor. Of course he is already gone for the day! I need to get going on something before this UTI gets any worse, but I don't want to take something that's not safe. Just wondering if anyone else has been prescribed this during pregnancy.

  • Yes, that is what my midwife prescribed.  She said it was perfectly safe and the only reason its on the C list is because it is contraindicated for late pregnancy (think week 38 or later).

  • I was prescribed Amoxicillin.

  • Yep - that is what I was prescribed.  I remember reading something on the sheet that is was not recommended during 3rd trimester or later in the pregnancy.

  • Okay thanks! This makes me feel better. Wanted to make sure it was not just a fluke.
  • I wouldn't take a class C without discussion - you COULD call the pharmacy and discuss with the pharmacist and find out their perspective or call the OB on call and discuss.

When I had a UTI in the 2nd trimester I took something that started with an A...I think it was amoxicillian plus something with it.

  • Oh yay! My midwife emailed me back (I LOVE that I can email her and she responds) and she said it's perfectly fine...just not in 3rd Tri when you're close to labor.
