what is target's return policy on registry items?

We decided to go ahead and register at Target (despite their poor customer service), so dh and I went in and put some things on the registry yesterday. some of them are kind of superfluous, or wrong color (we had to scan items in stock and not everything was there) or whatever. If we get things and then decide to return them, do they just give store credit? even without a gift receipt? I can't find this info on their website.

  • I haven't tried it yet, but have seen other posts about this.  People have said that as long as it's on the registry and shows it was purchased, they will take it back without a receipt.  I think you have to print our your registry for customer service to show it was purchased.  Even if you mark things as received yourself it will show up.

  • oh i'm not sure. 2 yrs ago when i got married i tried to return a few things that people got me that were on the registry but no receipt.  they wouldnt let me return them because they were over $20

if it has changed thats great. or maybe i just had a sucky customer service person when i tried to return that stuff.

also you can't return more than 2 items in one month without a receipt.  and those items cant be more than $20.  they ask for your drivers license and scan it.

  • Target's policy is very draconian.  They insist on a receipt, even for registry items.  The only exception is if you have the credit card used to purchase the item or a cancelled check (yeah right!).  I'm positive about this because we had a few items from our baby registry that we could not return because we did not receive a gift receipt - they didn't care about the fact it was on our registry.  In fact, when I have shopped there off of someone's registry I've had sales people remind me that I need a gift receipt because the person will not be able to return or exchange it without one.

Here is a link to their gift registry return policy.

  • Target will take back registry items that were bought off your registry...as long as they show purchased on your registry.  You print what is called a purchase log off the kiosk and they will process your return with that.  If it is not on your log you can return up to $75 (90% sure on this) without a receipt with your driver's license twice a year.

This registry policy went into effect last spring.

  • This is directly from their website.

Target makes returns and exchanges easy.

Need to return or exchange a registry gift? Not a problem. Follow the steps below to return an item purchased from your gift registry.

To return a gift purchased online at Target.com:

If your gift was purchased online, you have up to 90 days after your event date to return any new, unopened items. If you have the packing slip or order number, visit our Online Returns Center to find out how to print a gift receipt and where to return your item. When you?re using the Online Returns Center found on Target.com, be sure to check the box asking if this was a gift

If you don?t know the order number, you can return most items at your nearest Target store if they are on your Gift Purchase log. Your Gift Purchase Log is a list of all the gifts your friends and family told us about at the time of purchase. You can print your Gift Purchase Log anytime at the store kiosk and use it just like a receipt?all you need is your registry password! Make sure you also have a photo ID and that your items are new, unused and in original packaging with any accessories.

This.  Yesterday, I had to return a duplicate item that we got from our Target registry.  I just had to print the gift purchase log from the kiosk and I got a Target gift card with the total amount back.  It took less than 3 minutes.

Also, I added things to my registry online.  Sometimes one nearby store won't have the exact item/color in stock, but another nearby store will...so I just checked online and if it says that it's also available in stores, I added it to my registry, knowing that someone might be able to find it at one of the stores in the area.

I also added some online only things, which I was then able to order after the shower with 10% off.  The original price on the items was already cheaper than BRU and the discount more than covered the shipping - it was convenient.
