I was going to write a response about how religious ads have no place in a NYC subway, but then I reasoned that the vast majority of people actually *riding* the NYC subway aren't exactly the type to be swayed by some goofy ad telling you what to/not to believe.
Not sure if you meant that religious ads shouldn't be in government, but the subways are controls by the MTA and not the city. The MTA is a private company.
I see ads on TV for the LDS & Unitarian churches and billboard ads for churches here in Chicago, so if the atheists want a piece of the action, more power to 'em.

Hmm, I might be the only one who read it this way, but I see it as more of a way to catch the attention of other Atheists to let them know that there's a community for them out there. I kinda like it.

This is a good point. A lot of people will probably be upset by the ads, but I don't know that seeing a billboard/ad would convert me one way or the other
I wouldn't think so, to be honest. It's not saying God is bad or anything like that. I'd be that most people won't even notice them.
Oh, I have no problem with any religious ad in a private establishment. But most religions use ads because they firmly believe that their belief is correct and the only way to Heaven or what not and they want to share that news with other people. Atheists don't really think that, right?

I'm not an athiest, but I have an athiest friend who has described it as "freeing people from the shackles of religion".

That is the point. You read it exactly for what it is...I believe they even specify that in the article. I like it, too. :-)
