Chiropractor for latch-on help?

Has anyone taken their newborn to a chiropractor for latch-on problems?  I just had this suggested to me by a LLL leader and my husband isn't a believer.  I can't find much information on the internet but DD's pediatrician says they never recommend a chiro for newborns.

  • I wouldn't do it.  But I would never go to a chiropractor myself either if that tells you anything. Seems like I read somewhere that you aren't supposed to take babies to chiropractors.

  • That sounds like lunacy.

Actually there are lots of chiropractors that specialize in newborn care.  They don't 'crack' their backs...it's just applying small amounts of pressure.  I haven't had a need to take dd to see one yet, but if I was having problems I definitely would.

I didn't imagine that they were cracking the baby's backs.  But I still cannot fathom bringing a baby to a chiropractor because of nursing problems.

  • Chiro can help where there is restriction in certain areas of the spine. Often this restriction causes tension in the neck and jaw area similar with an adult. So that is why chiro can be beneficial to newborns who are having bf issues because sometimes it may be due to restriction in there neck that is causing them discomfort.

I just took my 7 day old baby to the chiro with me today just to get checked out since birth can cause some restriction in babies. Just make sure you are seeing someone who is experienced with babies and does "non-osseous" adjustments. It should be more like finger pressure in the areas of restriction. Good luck!

  • It makes sense to me. My jaw was out of socket this summer and the chirporactor worked wonders. What they do for babies consists more of massage and gentle pressure. If DS had a latching issue I would take him to see our chiropractor.
  • I have been taking DD to my chiropractor since she was about a month old to help with her reflux. As PP said it is not spine cracking but gentle adjustments made with the doc's fingers. My chiro is pediatric certified though. It makes sense to me that adjustments could help with latch.
