car seat people!

DS is turning 3 in November. He's 40 inches and about 35-36lbs.

The Britax Marathon is looking very small these days! It only goes to 49 inches and he looks uncomfortable.

Where next? Regent? Frontier? Other?

I know he is too young for a booster and plus I want him in a 5-point harness even when he's ready for a booster.

Advice?

Re: car seat people!

  • I have a Radian 65.  I love it.  It is a 5-point harness until 65 pounds and 5'1.  They also make a Radian 85.  It goes to 85 pounds.

  • I think the regent is overkill for an average sized kid. I love our regent, but Ethan is a really big kid. This is him, he is 44 inches, 42 lbs here...about the size of an average 5 year old. Look how much room he has left.

I'd get a frontier or nautilus, that can convert to a booster later.

  • He can stay in the Marathon until the tops of his ears are above the top of the shell or if his shoulders are above the tallest shoulder harness strap. My DD is the same height and she still fits comfortably in a Boulevard (which is the same height as the Marathon).

  • Sam is getting so big... he is like a little man now. Jessica is still at 25 pounds.

  • omg, the Regent is like... a Lazy-Boy! lol. wow. i'm not sure that would fit in my car.

I know, he has room to grow, but he is starting to look uncomfortable. i remember getting DS out of the infant seat a little early too -- i just couldn't go to the very limits of the seat.

I'll look at the Radian. Anyone know about the Frontier?

  • whitedress: tell me about it! his father is a skyscraper, that's the problem. Sam is waking up in the morning asking for french toast -- I might be in trouble.I feel like soon he'll need coffee and a cigarette. (lol).

    Jessica is a darling!

  • I love the radian--I have 2. But I guess I wouldn't get one for a forward facing only seat. The top harness slot is about an inch below the frontier, and of course does not convert to a booster. The frontier makes a much better booster than the nautilus, and is a bit roomier. It can be a harder install, though, and of course there's price to think about. I have 2 nauti's (for grandparents) and like them well enough, but I'm not sure if I'd like them for a full-time seat. They're not quite as comfy as E gets bigger.
  • maybe the Frontier would then be the best 'next step': bigger car seat and eventually, a good booster?
  • I just bought two Sunshine Radians and I really like them!

  • I love our Radian and wish I had known about it before we got a Marathon.

  • What the heck is up with my Radian?  I can't STAND mine- the straps never cooperate....  I'll have to play with it because everyone else seems so thrilled with theirs.
  • We have a Graco Nautilus in one car and the Marathon in the other. Honestly, I think DD looks more comfortable in the Marathon. It's just a cushier seat. She's about 42" and 37lbs.

ETA: She was just in it this morning, and we just need to move up to the top harness height.

  • we just got the safety 1st Vantage for in dh's truck.  DD really likes it and it goes up to 100lbs, has a 5 point harness and converts to a regular belt booster.  It was only $80 on Amazon with free shipping and as far as I've heard is #2 on consumer reports, had very good reviews.
