I HATE HATE HATE when DH's family makes last minute plans and expects us to drop everything and be there. SIL just called me and told me that they're having cake and ice cream for my niece tonight at 7. This is the THIRD birthday party in a month for my nieces and nephews that we have found out about last minute. (We have 11 of them, so it's kinda hard to keep everyone's B-days straight). DH has said we're just going to start not going if we don't have notice, but that's so not fair to the kids who don't understand stuff like that. DH has a meeting tonight, and is napping right now, s oI haven't told him yet. I told SIL that we'd try to be there if DH's meeting doesn't go too long. Ugh

Re: pet peeve (long)
I would probably be pretty catty about it ... when she called I would have said - oh did we miss the invitation you sent out? I'd probably reiterate that question at the party if I went.
It isn't the child's fault but you do have your own life and child now too. You could always send the child a card and just not go. I'm not big on being expected to show up to social functions with last minute notice - especially now that we have a child ourselves.
