Okay so the people on the news are always getting at pregnant women to get the vaccine I feel like but from my understanding the only one currently available is the nasal spray which isn't for pregnant women, correct? I'm from MI, I'm not sure if they are available elsewhere perhaps and not here?
Re: H1N1 Vaccine
Hi, I am also from MI and work at UofM hospital. I just got my H1N1 this afternoon (the injectable, not nasal). So, it is available. However, I was told they have a limited amount, but hope to get more. And, yes, you are right, pregnant women are not supposed to get the nasal version because it contains live virus. The injectable is killed virus.
Sounds right to me but I'm only a couple states away from you too....We aren't supposed to get the nasal version and its the first to come out but we are at the top of the list of ppl who should get them....Makes a whole lot of sense huh?
It will be available to me in the next month I was told by my OB (who didn't ask if I wanted to or was considering, just assumed I would...ugh....). So yes, soon enough we can get them if we choose. I take the news as a push to get us there or scheduled for it maybe?
My doctor wants me to get it at the end of this month but I am not sure I want it. Aren't you scared of the side affects or the long term affects on the baby? I mean we don't know what it will do to our babies. I might just be scared and overreacting though....
I'm more scared of getting H1N1 and it harming the baby. Since I work on a college campus/medical school, I have a higher exposure rate. I have been told by many sources, that the H1N1 vaccine is made the exact same way the seasonal flu shot is made. If you normally would get the seasonal flu shot, then you should consider getting this one as well. The CDC has some good information about the vaccine and the virus itself, you should check it out.
Yes, you are overreacting. It is really no different than the regular seasonal flu vaccine, which has been safely administered to millions of pregnant women for years. Even so, studies ARE underway on the effects on pregnant women, and preliminary results support the widespread recommendations that pregnant women get the vaccine.
I have RA and hypothyroid in addition to being pregnant. In the past I have had to be hospitalized for some really stupid things because my immune system just sucks that bad so no, in my case I'm not as worried about the long-term affects of getting the shot as opposed to not getting it.Also, this is no different than getting a regular flu shot. Had the H1N1 developed a few months sooner, it would have been incorporated into the regular vaccine,.
