Double names

I like Mary Kate or Anna Kate for a girl.

1. Do people with double names like that generally have another middle name like Mary Kate Elizabeth Smith or do they generally just keep it at 3 names (Mary Kate Smith)?

2. Do you think double names are confusing to the person with the name?

3. What about hyphens? Do people do that Mary-Kate/Anna-Kate? Like or dislike? Does that go on the birth certificate or do people just do that in their day to day lives?

I'm not sure, my first thought is that a middle name seems a bit much, unless the first name is altogether (i.e. Annamarie).

I don't love the hyphens though...

    Sadie is not impressed.

From my experience, if there is a space between the names (Mary Katherine, Codi Anne), that is the middle name. However, if there is a hyphen or no space (Anna-Kate, Emma-Leigh, MargaretAnn, LeighAnne) another MN is added. Really though, you can do what you like. My friend Mary Katherine, who goes strictly by that, has been asked many times what her MN is. People expect another almost. Plus lots of people have two MNs anyway. As for hyphens, you can put those on a birth certificate if that's what you like. And lastly, all the examples I used are people I know. Some double names I like, some not so much. I think it can be confusing if you do it to names that sound like a traditional, one word name as is Emma-Leigh or LeighAnne. Whatever works for you though! :)

I agree completely.  I know too that the use and meaning of middle names varies a lot by geography, so it may be different where you are.  Also, I don't see why two names would be confusing to the person with the name.  Can you clarify what you mean by that?

I kind of like two names if there are names you like and they sound good together.  My friend named her daughter Emma-Leigh Rose (right before that movie came out so no correlation at all!).  They call her Emma-Leigh, Emma, and Emmie.  I like it, but that's me.  She doesn't seem confused at all by it at four years old.

Thanks! What I mean by confusing is say, for instance, a kindergarten teacher assumes the child goes by the first name, and calls out "Mary Smith" with taking attendance. Is Mary there? Etc.

Yeah if I see a space between two names, I assume first and middle or first and last. If I were to give my child two first names, I personally would either keep the names together (AnneMarie) or hyphenate (Anne-Marie).

I think you can still give a middle name if you want.

I actually have two middle names with spaces, no hyphens or anything. So I have first, middle, middle, last.  It was a bit much as a kid but I survived and kinda like it now.

I only know of one person with a double name...and she only has 3 names (as your example, Mary Kate Smith). The only time I know of her being confused by it was when she was thinking of getting married and didn't know what her initials would be or how to change her name (Mary Kate Smith vs. Mary Kate Olson vs. Mary Kate Smith Olson vs. Mary Smith Olson, etc....) I dislike hyphens, but this would be good if you want her to have a middle name. It would go that way on the birth certificate, if that is the way you want it legally spelled. Of course, you could always give her 4 names.

DH's aunt is named Mary Ellen and goes by that mostly, but she occasionally signs a card "Mary" or introduces herself as Mary so I don't think it would be confusing if a teacher called out Mary, since well, that IS her name (at least part of it).

I think double names are adorable, but I like them with a space and an additional middle name. Anne Marie Catherine (Catherine would be the middle name) is a name that I love, but DH isn't huge on double names. I'm not a fan of dashes or no space unless it's Leanne. I also think Sara Beth is so cute.

My full first name is Jill Marie no hypen, no flowing together Jill -space- Marie.

When I was a kid I always thought my name was Jill (middle name Marie) and was FURIOUS with teachers for taking attendance and calling me Jill Marie because that was my name when I was in trouble.

When I got older and needed my birth certificate for something I saw that my first name was Jill Marie...so, I started going by Jill Marie professionally...no one gets it.  Even though clear as day when I fill out paperwork saying First Name: Jill Marie Middle Name: (leave blank) everything always comes back Jill first name Marie middle name.

So, please - either name the child Marykate, Mary-Kate or Mary middle name Kate.

I like double names. I think they work best as a FN and then a MN, like Emma Katherine, nn Emma Kate, or whatever.

My friend is a Sara-Jane, and she hated it. She only wanted to go by Sara. Giving someone a second middle name is just a hassle for test forms, DMV forms, etc., etc., later in life.

Also, it gives the child more, and easier, options if they decide they want to be Katie instead of Emma Kate, or Annie instead of Anne Marie.

My sister has two first names Sarah Oliva and there is no hyphen. She gets called a lot of things... some call her by the whole first name ... others Sarah... some Olivia... and last year she came home from school and said she wanted to be called "Livie" ... I love her name but it can be confusing.

    so who knows...

sorry... I spelled that wrong initially ...its "Sarah Olivia"

Just a warning about hyphens. My boss has one in her name and is CONSTANTLY being pulled out for security checks at the airport. (We have flown 6 times in the past two years and she was pulled for 5 of them!) When she asked someone about it at the ticket counter they said it was they hyphen. The computer system has trouble with them and bumps them as a warning.?

You would think that in this day with so many people using them in last names that it would not be a problem. ?So maybe by the time the child is older they will have fixed the problem...?

My first name is hyphenated. I hated it growing up. Please don't do this to your child.
