TTC after 35

Meds

I start Friday with the RE and meds.

How much should I expect to pay for meds? My insurance will cover 50%.

It's hard to guess until you know which ones you're using (IUI/IVF?), the doses, and how long you will stim for. If you're using FSH meds(Follistim/Gonal F) they are very pricey. ?My IVF cycles cost about $4,500 for a micro-flare protocol. I think this cycle is the most expensive, while others are less expensive. Good luck at your appt!

  • My IF clinic says the average cost of meds per IVF cycle is $3000.

  • Obviously I had no idea about the cost because I was thinking about $500 or so not $ thousands...

Nothing like adding more stress to the mix. As if the $10,000 wasn't enough to digest.  Oh well, it will be worth it.

  • It is hard to know without knowing the exact meds and protocol, but it will almost certainly be more than $500 :(.  Mine have been around $5K each cycle, so that would put you at around $2500.

I was surprised at the cost of the meds, as well.  I didn't think they were a substantial part of the cost, but they certainly are!  I am very lucky to have insurance.

Do you have any kind of prescription insurance?  You might try and see if they would pay.  My meds are actually covered by my prescription insurance and not my fertility coverage.  As long as they are filled at a pharmacy, that is.  Nothing I get as part of a procedure or from the doctor directly is, however.

    Good luck!

  • OMG are you kidding me??? The meds cost this much?  Really?  I know my comment seems dumb but dayum!  That's ridiculous.  I was looking to switch insurance for 2010 because my employer pays up to $50K in IF but maybe they too don't cover drugs.  Yikes.

  • It's definitely thousands for an IVF cycle.  Mine are probably higher than most because my clinic and pharmacy (separate but informally aligned with the practice) seem higher-priced than most.

And like I said, see if the prescription coverage will cover them at all!

  • I stopped by our benefits department and they said that if I have the prescriptions filled at Walgrens then they will be covered at 50%. Still in shock over the cost.

At least I won't be completly shocked when I check out.

Do they at least let you pay it out?
