Parenting after a Loss

Ethan doing sign language - video!!

I know a lot of you are interested in teaching your baby sign language, so I wanted to show you this and tell you my story.  I actually studied to be a sign language interpreter at one point, so I was SO EXCITED to teach Ethan sign language.  I started with him at 3 months.  We signed and signed and signed with him....finally one weekend at around 10 months he signed "fan."  But that was the only sign he did....and he only did it that one weekend, he wouldn't do it again.

I admit we got discouraged and stopped signing with him consistently for a few months.  However, around 12.5-13 months he started imitating us a lot.  So I started to sign to him again frequently about 2 weeks ago and WOW!!  He picked up signs in minutes and started using them all the time.  Sometimes he doesn't always sign them correctly or at the right time, but he is definitely trying to communicate.  Right now he has a signed vocabulary of about 20 words and this morning he even started to do two word combinations "more milk."  He only speaks about 4 words, so this is pretty cool.

Anyway, today I caught a few of his signs on camera so I made a little video of it.  The video is posted on my blog at https://amyandjames.wordpress.com.

I just wanted to encourage you to keep signing with your LO, even if it seems like they aren't getting it.  It might take some time, but one day it will click and they will take off with it!!

Re: Ethan doing sign language - video!!

  • Very cool! ?Do you recommend any instructional video/book for us to learn the signs?

    ?

  • I think the one I had was called Baby Signs, but really any one will do as long as it has clear illustrations on how to do the signs.  You can also look online for demonstrations on different signs.  You just have to repeat repeat repeat over and over.

  • I am glad you posted this. I started just a few signs when DS was younger. The only one I have consistantly done it the one for drink. DS never signed back to me. I got really discouraged too. The other day I saw him do the sign while in his highchair. I was not sure if he just had food in his hand or if he was trying to sign.

I really thought it was too late to start back. I will try again. Maybe he will really pick it up since he is older? I hope so!!

  • Very cool!! Loved the video.
