we tried and were extremely unsuccessful. we talked with pedi about it and she said that some babies really need the swaddle for longer than usual. she said her kids used swaddle til almost 10 months. since max was hitting all milestones (rolling over, sitting up, bearing weight on legs) she said there is no reason to quit the swaddle if it helps him sleep. max STTN with it, and is up every 20 minutes without it. every few weeks we try to wean and he'll let us know when he's ready

DD started breaking out around 3, 3 1/2 months ish, but still liked to be swaddled. So we started by just letting one arm out, then the other. If she broke out in the middle of the night, we let her be. Eventually we didn't use it anymore
I went cold turkey at 6 months- she slept like crap w/ or w/o it so it didn't much matter. I guess she slept slightly better with it. Then I did a modified version of ferber for sleep training about a week later and she's been STTN ever since.
We stopped cold turkey at 5 months because DS would roll over onto his tummy even if i rolled blankets up and put them on either side of him. So for me it was a safty issue. I wanted his arms free if he needed to push away from the crib while on his tummy.
The first two nights sucked but then he was fine.?
We broke her from the swaddle around 4.5 months. We did it gradually, starting with one arm out for a week. Then both arms out for a few days. Then she went in a sleep sack. Now she sleeps with just a light blanket and does just fine.
I did it early-ish at 3.5 months. I tried cold turkey with just a blanket in the crib, and that was a fail. Then I tried a sleep sack and it magically worked. I think the sack makes her feel secure because it's wrapped around her like the swaddle, but she has the freedom that she wanted. GL!
My DD is still swaddled, she really needs the swaddle to sleep at night, naps during the day she goes un-swaddled. Our Pedi also said there is nothing wrong with keeping her swaddled and she is growing and developing just fine. She will let us know when she is ready, I used to obsess about it but now I am cool with it. Whatever helps her to sleep right!
