How can you tell if it's allergies or a cold?

Last night P started getting a clear slight runny nose. I didn't have anything to give him for bedtime except for Robitusin (which helped him sleep) and a vicks vaporizer. This morning I gave him some Claritin. It seems to have helped a lot but he is still sneezing occasionally (his nose isn't running as much at all). I'm drowning him in Vitamin C just to be sure.

Can you tell at the beginning the difference between a cold and allergies?

The way I can tell for me is the itchiness - colds don't make my nose and eyes itchy. DD has mild allergies right now - I can tell it's allergies and not a cold because her snot is clear and she keeps rubbing her eyes and nose.

My son has allergies. He gets them in the am and it doesnt last all day. I give him claritin at night. Its hard to tell sometimes, but allergies aren't all day.
