s/o the mac and cheese/bad foods posts (sort of a PSA)

sorry to start this again today :) i didnt have time to read the other posts until now?the problem that i have with mac & cheese (and processed foods in general) is that they contain MSG. I am allergic to MSG and have horrible reactions to it, even in the slightest amount. (lol though i still eat stuff that contains MSG from time to time and suffer for it.) Mostly I get severe migraines. Other times i have shortness of breath, an insane spike in blood pressure and heart rate and (sorry TMI) irritable bowel w/ extremely painful movements.Check out?truthinlabeling.org/index.html. MSG reactions can lead to a lot of physical problems that are misdiagnosed as other disorders and illnesses. (some google searches will back this info up for anyone that wants to balk at this one link)Since I've cut way back on processed foods I have noticed a significant difference in my health. MSG is in way more stuff than you'd think. Pretty much anything salty has MSG. Anything that was once a food but you need to add milk or water to re-activate it has MSG. Any meal you eat in a restaurant has MSG (except for chinese food. funny enough they are one of the few places that no longer use it).ftr, i dont care what you feed your kid. In our house, izzy eats what we eat and it just so happens that its a lot of non-processed foods. this only happens because of my allergies.i just thought this was worth mentioning since many people dont realize they might have a sensitivity to MSG.?

  • Great post and great information!

MSG can give me migraines too.  So I stick to primarily non-processed foods.  But I do love me some fast food. However, I often pay for that indulgence in other ways that you mentioned above.

LOL i know. its really hard to not eat that stuff. but fortunately the organic mac & cheese doesn't have MSG in it. woot!

and when we do fast food, i stick to burgers w/o any special sauces. ?

  • This is interesting. I also dont care what everyone feeds their kids... but my sister has three girls on a constant diet of box mac and cheese and frozen chicken nuggets. Her kids have a few small health/behavior issues and she was thinking there might be a link with their diet. Just a thought... msg? Id love to know more.

there is definitely a link to MSG and behavioral issues. i will try to find the other sites i've found info on. I'm at work and dont have them bookmarked. but i have dealt with depression all of my life. I choose to go unmedicated because i feel that is best for me. Since I have changed my diet, there is a huge difference in the way i feel. I still struggle from time to time but months of depression have turned into a day or two here and there.?

  • great post.

we do our best to avoid processed foods for DD for the many of the same reasons.

it is worth noting, however, that saying all restaurants use MSG is a gross over generalization.   it might be more accurate to say that most chain restuarants do.  MSG is something that we're very careful about and, as someone with a husband who used to work in the restaurant industry, i can assure you that many, many restaurants don't use it at all.

  • Yeah, DH is constantly on me about taking "the easy way" when cooking. He complains of the amount of sodium in processed foods. So, we hardly ever cook out of the box. As I mentioned, we usually grill or bake salmon and broil fish (whatever type) steaks, bake chicken in a marinade, and broil (beef) steak.

So yes, I have boxed meals standing by in the pantry, but I do not pull them out on a regular basis by any means.

I think there's a balance in most every average household and people need to just respect that.

By balance do you mean low-sodium high-caffeine?

  • Lovely. Now more AEs have invaded this board.

Only 3 more months till I make another move from the BSC.

  • Hey MB, just a heads up, we use Trader Joe's mac and cheese-they have a pledge not to use MSG in any of their own brand of foods...and while it may not be exactly "healthy", it's not super processed, and it's really, really yummy! Wink

  • FTR, there's nothing wrong with homemade mac & cheese.

Google a good recipe and choose your ingredients well.

you need to chill. this post is not about you. i was making a statement based on the question of why m&c is 'bad'.

you put this stuff out there for everyone to judge. you had to know that you would not get a good reaction to letting people know you let your kid drink espresso.

if you felt secure in your food choices, you would not be so defensive about it. its like BM vs FF all over again but now its Kraft vs Annie's. jesus.

like i said in my OP, i dont care what you and your family eat. I am just mentioning this because consumption of MSG can lead to so many other health issues.?

    ?

katie and VT, i will email you tonight with all of my links.?

  • MSG is also a migraine trigger for me.

Re: Homemade Mac N Cheese, Tricia0107 (or whatever the numbers are) has a recipe that we have made a few times. It's to die for!!

fair enough. :) i live in the land of chain?restaurants?and that was my frame of mind while writing. but you are right, if you go to something a little more upscale and not a chain, then you will lessen your chances of having a meal laden with MSG. (PF changs is MSG free though. woot!)

  • When DH and I were grocery shopping a while ago, we saw BOTTLED pure MSG in the spice aisle. Who uses that? I can't even go in the spice aisle now because I want to throw up.

MSG is nasty stuff. It's in so many foods, and people don't even realize it. I definitely notice a change in my mood when I eat foods that contain it or HFCS.

  • I'm so glad I saw this!  I guess I never really thought about MSG and what it could do.  Thanks for posting!!

I had to post as well, my family has a restaurant and we do not use any MSG.  We check all our products and any that contain MSG are sent back, and we find a better non-MSG replacement.

i have not purchased m&c in a long time, so the ingredients may have changed.?but the easy mac does have an MSG-like ingredient (it is listed as?SODIUM TRIPOLYPHOSPHATE, which has the same effects as msg. i guess you could call it a by-product.)?

thanks for posting though! i am totally going to buy the stove top version now. i have some mac and cheese eating to make up for. lol

  • Thanks for posting. Yet another reason I need to start eating better! DD is still on mostly single ingredient food or the things I make from scratch, but I need to do better, too.

If you can send me your links or post them later, I'd appreciate it. :)
