Breastfeeding

Length of feeding and time in between

During the first few days of breastfeeding...can you tell me how long your feedings were and how long between feedings?? DS fell asleep a lot while breastfeeding...and we just had an awful time with it. I had supply issues but he was too sleepy to help me make more....so I tried to pump - but obviously didn't get that much right away.

My biggest question is if you went mostly on LO's demand or did you put yourself on a schedule.

We ended up pumping and feeding him both bm and formula for the next month or so until I wasn't getting anything out of the pump.

Re: Length of feeding and time in between

  • My little one wanted to feed about every 2 and a half to 3 hours. I had to set an alarm and make sure she ate every 3 at night because of her jaundice however she was ready around the time of the alarm every time any way. We were given the clear now to demand feed at night which has been around 3 to 4 hours (not allowed to let her go more than 5, not an issue) and still around 2 and a half to 3 during the day. There have been times where she will feed after only an hour or so but for the most part she follows the above. The only reason we have had to watch the clock was due to her pretty bad jaundice but as long as she was feeding in the time frame it was whenever she wanted it.

  • I was told to feed on demand with a newborn and actually still do that.  He would nurse almost non stop for the first few weeks but it slowly got better.  I think the only time you schedule is when your newborn doesn't want to nurse often so you shouldn't let them go longer than 2 hours.
  • Oh gosh, the first couple of days he would feed for about 10-20 min. and eat every 90 min. or so.  I don't remember much except that it was almost constant, but maybe that was after the first couple of days.  I just fed on demand b/c I never had to worry about him not waking up to eat.
  • DD wanted to nurse about every 2.5 to 3 hours during the day, and that was from the time of the START of a feeding.  She would sometimes nurse for 40 min, so she would be ready again 2 hours later or so.  But, once she was several weeks old, it wasn't that regular.  She would not feed as much during the day (every 3 hours), then cluster feed at night (like every hour).  I fed strictly on demand.  There was no scheduling DD for a LONG time!
  • I have low milk supply and LO had jaundice, so we had to supplement 2 oz of formula from the beginning. I feed him every 3 hours or so, unless he's awake and then he gets hungry faster, so every 2 hours. At night he'll go 4 hours w/o waking up. During the day I sometimes have to wake him up every 3 hours, otherwise I think he would again go 4 hrs w/o eating. But when that happens I have to give him BM and then 3 oz instead of 2 oz of formula.

God, this feeding thing is more complicated than I thought.
