I have Mono

I work with elementary age students...thought I had a cold...turns out its mono...typically doesn't pose any threat to my baby (I'm 24 weeks) but my OB wants me to take a whole week off next week!  anyone else ever had mono during pregnancy? (or ever for that matter? I've never had it)  how long till you typically feel better/have energy back?

Re: I have Mono

  • I had it freshman year of high school. I felt sick for about 4 days and then tired for about 2 months. The fatigue seemed to take forever to go away. I wasn't allowed to go to school for about a week or two and then I could only go for half days for quite a while. Then I went for the full day but had to go to the nurses office for a nap at lunch time. No sports or exercise...I wasn't even allowed to carry my own books or walk up the steps. My spleen and liver were very enlarged. I hope you feel better soon!!

  • no experience with this, but i certainly sympathize! a pp is right, you will definitely benefit by just taking the time off, instead of trying to keep soldiering on. You have to let yourself get better and get rest, otherwise it could last FOREVER. get well soon!

  • I had it about 2 years ago (I was 22 then). I was really sick for about 2 weeks, then tired for almost 2 months afterward. I work at a dental office and my really compassionate boss told me to just "Make sure you wear your mask and gloves so you don't spread it"... yeah, thanks for offering to let me take off a few days.

  • I have had mono (though not while pregnant). When my doctor told me about it he said that they symptoms can last anywhere from a few months to 18months. I had it from Sept-Feb. Nothing too uncomfortable just very very tired all the time. And very shortly after the mono symptoms subsided we found out we were expecting...so I went back to being tired. LOL.

  • I haven't had personal experience, but my best friend had mono in high school. She was out for a couple weeks and like pp, she had the fatigue for a couple of months at least. I'm sorry you're having to deal with this! Pregnancy is tiring on its own. Definitely get as much rest as possible!
  • Mono is actually caused by the Epstein Barr Virus...that virus comes in levels up to 20...but anything big is considered something totally different than just mono.  I had mono in highschool-took about 2 weeks to feel back to normal...I also had level 18 EBV and had a 3 year recovery period, so trust me it could be worse.

Drink LOTS of fluids...I mean LOTS.  Get alot of rest-just lay there and watch crappy daytime TV, don't try to accomplish anything because your body needs an insane amount of rest to realy get over it.  You'll be fine!

  • No real insight but my friend had mono while she was pg too -- in the first tri, and she recovered fine and it didn't affect her son at all.
