Another ring post

I understand some people don't have warranties on their rings or free sizing, but IF you DO, then why not just have your rings sized?  I wore my wedding rings my entire pg last time and will this time.  If they get too tight, get it sized and size it down after pg.  Not judging, just curious why it seems like nobody does this.  I generally have to get my rings sized every season (my fingers are almost always semi-swollen during summer), so I guess it just never occurred to me not to.

Re: Another ring post

  • I can still wear my rings and if they get too tight, I will just stop wearing them until they fit again. I think having your rings resized over and over seems weird IMO. I wouldn't want to bother with having them sized to fit for only a few months and then having them sized back to how they were initially afterwards... Hmm

  • I thought about doing that but have decided against it because my dads wedding band got so thin and he can no longer wear it because he had to resize it so many times throughout the years! Luckily I already have another band I can wear that I usually wear on my right hand. It's bigger and I still have more room to swell...err I mean grow! lol
  • i heard that you weren't supposed to have your ring sized too often because it weakens the metal.....so i will probably just take them off when the time comes...
  • I was told by a jeweler that sizing and resizing a ring several times can hurt the strength of the ring--it'll be more likely to break.

I have NO idea if this is true, though, because jewelers will tell you just about anything. We were also told that titanium can't be cut, but later found out that it can be.

  • A reputable jeweler will only resize a ring so many times before you risk the integrity of the piece.  I wouldn't want to get it expanded then cut down over and over again.

  • I've never heard that it can weaken the metal.  I always see the same person when I take mine and she's never said anything, I'll have to ask about that.  I do know that I had a bracelet break again and again and was told that the repair guy couldnt' fix it anymore because it wouldn't hold (and my mom was just told the same thing about a bracelet of hers).
  • There is no way I would do this or suggest doing this. I used to work for a jeweler and as has been stated, when a ring is sized it slightly compromises the strength of the metal, and depending on the setting style, can slightly tweak the stone setting.

  • in my situation we have engraving on the inside of both my and DH's rings. If we ever resize, it will get screwed up and we'd have to pay to get it redone.

I'm pretty sure it does because my dads band got super thin eventually from all the resizing and it broke! Granted he and my mom have been married 28 years but I'd still like to be wearing my ring that far down the road! Plus my ring is more of a vintage look so I'm sure it would eventually mess it up some how!

  • My best friends family owns a jewelry store and I was trying to figure out if I should get a ring sized. For my birthday my boyfriend (he is 1/2 irish) had them make me a claddagh ring with a pink saphire. I wear it constantly and was worried about wearing it through my pregnancy, they will not size it whatsoever. Because of just that it, it puts too much stress on the metal. Although if you do get a ring sized up, make sure it is a reputable place that actually adds metal as oposed to stretching it. Stretching will weaken it way quicker and cause breakage.
  • As a jewelry store manager, I will tell you that yes it does weaken the metal and make it more likely to break/lose stones. However, if your jewelry store covers that kind of thing for ya, I would think you're in the clear. Maybe just double check that they will cover if it breaks, and what will the do to fix it if it continues to break? FWIW, my salespeople and I do not just tell people anything.

  • The more you size it, though, the weaker it gets.  Everytime you change it, you lose gold on the band.  If my bands don't fit anymore, I plan on just wearing them on a chain.

  • My engagement ring was sized when we bought it, but in the case of my wedding band, I can't have it sized. It's a custom made eternity band with engraving on the inside. We can't even take it back to the jeweler and have it done.
