Lorelei/Lorelai destined to have nn Lori?

We found out that we are having another girl. We can't agree on a name but I reLly love Lorelei/Lorelai. Here is the thing, my mother to whom I don't speak is Lorraine, nn Lori. Since we dont speak, I really don't want to have a daughter that has the same nn. I know Rory is a nn but I am not crazy about it. Any other suggestions? Or should I just look for another name? Sorry about the long paragraph, I am on my iPad. Thanks ladies!

  • I don't think she would necessarily get the nickname Lori.  I went to college with a Lorelei and that was what everyone called her.

  • Parents are normally the ones who start the whole nickname phase and it continues into the school them.  If you like the name and choose to name the baby that and want a nickname just choose one you like, such as Rory instead or Lori.  Smile  My name is Kristina and I have never gone by a nickname.  My cousin is also a Kristina who my mom did not know was her first name when naming me because everyone called her Krissy since the day she was born.

  • Yes, there's a real possibility that your daughter will end up going by Lori at some point. You could avoid it when she is little, but she may decide for herself that she likes it later on. If that would bother you, I think you should find another name.

On another note, if you do decide to use it, I urge you to spell it correctly. (Lorelei)

  • Some people will call my mom Lor, but never Lori.

  • If we have a girl we are going with Lorelei. I was also worried about the nickname thing. I hate nn Lori. So we are going to call her Lulu. Lorelei Lousie will be her total name. Just come up with something else. My DS's name is phillip and at daycare they call him philphil. You never know but don't let it sour the full name.

  • like a pp said, you can def control this when she is younger, but later on, she coudl CHOOSE to go to by Lori.  I think that is the real risk.  if she grows up as Lorelei, I think it would be a small chance she'd suddenly decide on Lori but you never know!
  • I know a Lorelai whose mom considered both Lola and Lilah as nn.  I wouldn't go with a nn for it myself.  It's too pretty to shorten.

  • Lorelai is short (and pretty) enough that it doesn't necessitate a nickname. I doubt she'll be clamoring to go by Lori-- that name is starting to sound very middle-aged, and I doubt it'll be popular in the younger generation. Maybe people will causally call her Lor or something, but that's pretty distinct from Lori. It's true that ultimately you have no control over what nicknames she chooses to use, but I just doubt that she'll trade in a nice name like Lorelai for something so dated and boring as Lori.

Maybe I'm just trying to encourage you to use the name because I think it's so nice! :)
