2nd Trimester

safe to kayak?

I am currently 15 weeks pregnant, and would like to think of myself as a fairly active person. We have a camping trip planned for labor day weekend. We will be kayaking or canoeing (which every I want) but am not sure if it's safe.  Any thoughts? I have called my dr's office and have heard two things. First, NO, do NOT go... and the second, should be fine at least till 20 weeks. This trip is a very lesure ride. NOT the rapid's or anything. I see if kayaking is going to be me doing all the work. But in a canoe I'd just be sitting there. What to do?!

Re: safe to kayak?

  • yeah you're fine.  GO have fun.

  • I was told no to anything like that.
  • I went kayaking in a lake at around 16/17 weeks. It was definitely harder than I thought (since my muscles are so stretched) but i went for about 10-15 minutes and I was completely exhausted. We also went in really calm waters so I wasn't paddling against the waves or wind too much.

Just take it slow and listen to your body.

  • I kayaked with both DD - at around 15 weeks, I think.  I did get more tired, more easily.  Both times were in calm bodies of water.
  • If you are active and not high-risk, I would think it's okay.  We're going to FL next month when I'll be about 22 weeks and I asked my dr at my last appt if I should be restricted from any water/boating activities/sports and she said I should be fine.

Who did you talk to at your dr's office?  When you spoke to the second person, did you tell them what the first person said and ask why their response was different?

  • I went last weekend and it was fine.  Harder to get back out at the end, though Smile.
  • There is another girl who is suppose to go on the trip as well, SHE talked to her dr and they said OK untill 20weeks.  She's not going anyway because she's about 26 weeks and has a little one at home to take care of. When I called my dr's office I talked to the registered nurse who answer's all the pregnancy related questions. I told her I heard differently, and she said she'd have the dr call me later.

I think of myself as active. No shape to run a marothan or anything... but surely not high risk, and do my best to stay in shape-ish Wink

  • I went on a kayak at around 13 weeks and had fun. I'm pretty active and have kayak before. The doctor just suggested that we do Tandom, so that if I got tired someone can help out. We did it in the middle of the ocean with waves and everything. I did flip out and the scariest part was trying to get back in to the kayak without putting to much strain on me. I did a 3 hour tour with a 15 minute break and casual stops. I advised the tour guide I was pregnant and he just kind of kept it in mind, DH was with me.

If you are going in calmer waters than I did, you should be fine. I think the only thing that got me was that I was exhausted and very hungry after. I'm really glad I went and had lots of fun though.
