Pregnant after 35

First appointment

I had my first appointment today at 8 weeks.  The technician first tried to see the heartbeat using the machine on my stomach but couldn't find it.  Then she tried internally and it still took her a while (eventually had to get me in stirrups).  Once she finally found it, she said it was perfect.  However, she said I was only measuring 7 weeks, 3 days.

I'm probably worrying over nothing but for my first pregnancy, the doctor saw the heartbeat at 6 days using the machine on my stomach (no internal) so I'm wondering it took so long this time.

Did anyone have either of these issues (trouble finding heartbeat or earlier than expected)?

  • I don't have the answers you're looking for. Hopefully someone with experience in this area can help. Just wanted to give you some good wishes and positive thoughts :)

  • Thanks Jennifer!
  • I don't think you have to be worrying. At this point, from what I remember before, things can go plus or minus several days or a week each time you have a u/s. It might have taken long b/c the u/s tech was not as experienced as you might have preferred. I had a very sweet, but very not skilled, tech for our NT with Kate. She had a heck of a time getting the n-fold measurement. Finally had to call in another tech to get it. It is as with everything else. Just because someone gets paid to do a job does not mean they are very good at it - it just means they passed the interview process.
  • For my first appt at 9 weeks, they did a transvaginal u/s.  But, there is a girl in my office who is pregnant (8 weeks behind me) and her doctor tried to do the abdominal u/s at 6 weeks and couldn't find a hb.  It scared the crap out of her, and I thought it was really silly that they tried that way so early.  So, while I don't have any personal experience, I know someone who has.

  • My doctor used the transvaginal sonar at my 8 week sonogram....had my first stomach one at 12 weeks.  Regarding the difference in measurements, that early on one millimeter can make you off by up to a week.  Also, sperm lives in the body for up to several days (3 or 4???) so you may have conceived a little later than you thought.

  • Oh, and I had transvaginal u/s at 6 wks for both pregnancies. Actually, I had 3 within 2 weeks on the first pregnancy due to bleeding and clots. This time, they were a little curious to see if I was carrying twins (no real reason that I know of), so in I went. I think a different tech would have had an easier time of things. Hang in there and call your ob with any concerns when they open on Monday.
  • Alls I can contribute is that at this stage in the game the baby can measure +/- a week and still be w/in the normal range.
