Pregnant after 35

what 'risky' things are you still doing?

I drink diet soda. eat sushi (although I'm trying to limit tuna to once a week), don't worry about deli meat or hotdogs, and love good cheese. I'll also have a sip or two of dh's wine, and every once in a while I'll skip my prenatals and just have a folic acid pill (I hate what the vitamins do to my stomach). Oh, and we just booked a transatlantic cruise for when I'm 21 weeks, and I'll fly to and from the Middle East when I'm 30-32 weeks.

I realize I'm probably 'extreme risk' mom, but am I the only one who isn't strictly 'by the book'? What are you doing that's on the risky list?

  • Since I hit my 2nd tri I drink a small cup of coffee every morning. I still feel very guilty about it.

  • As I noted in a post below artificial sweetners seem to be the worst thing for me.  Even the "good for me" yogurt that I ate a little while ago has sucralose in it, which I didn't realize until after I ate the yogurt, is actually Splenda.

I do eat tuna, but no more than twice a week - and less if I'm having another kind of fish or shrimp.

I think it's great that you are that comfortable though!

  • I just can't live on water and lentils, so I do "bad" things too.

I drink a cup of coffee every morning and a sometimes in the afternoon.

I drink sodas with artificial sweetner.

I eat deli meats and would never dream of microwaving them first.

If champagne is around, I can never resist having at least a little.

I carry relatively heavy stuff if no one is around.

I take real heartburn medicine, those natural treatments are a joke when it comes to my burn.

I eat all kinds of craptastic food.

I am trying to talk my boss into letting my go to Miami when I am 30 weeks (they are afraid of me flying, I'm not).

I will get every flu vaccine they will give me.

Honestly, I think as long as you don't overdo things, it's all fine. Maybe if I had had any scares along the way with this pg, I would be more cautious.

ETA; If I truly felt that these things were "risky", I would never do them. I would NEVER do anything that I felt put my child at risk.

  • Hardly anything the first time around.  I heated up deli meat, avoided soft cheeses, wouldn't eat sushi, nixed caffeine instantly, wouldn't dye my hair anymore, use nail polish, avoided any medication for headaches/colds... you get the idea!  Travel never bothered me though and a sip of wine isn't a big issue.  I'll probably be the same this time around.

I guess I'm the anti-risk taker.  Stick out tongue  To each their own, you know.

  • aren't you the big rebel

  • Does "walking" count?

  • Diet soda, deli meat, good cheese and rare beef.

I would like to give up the diet soda, but sometimes I need the caffine to get rid of a HA and I really despise regular soda.  I have made major cut-backs though.

  • I drink coffee here and there, have had a few non-alcoholic beers, which people are against but i had to so i wouldn't be outed, i get my hair dyed. not too bad but i was feeling guilty about some of it. we are all fine and our mothers did worse stuff i am sure!
  • I still eat hot dogs and drink coke or pepsi (whichever one I can get my hands on).  Not as much as I used to, but I still drink it.  I also went through a phase where iced tea was my very best friend. In addition, I have probably gone a day or so where the closest thing I have had to a vegetable is ketchup.  I try to keep it in moderation (hey, I haven't had any feta or blue cheese), but I feel the same way as PP- our moms did WAY riskier things.  My mom smoked while pregnant both times in the late 60's and early 70's.

  • I know I am extreme.. but my doctors highly recommended it even before I started trying for our 2nd that I go on a really strict pregnancy diet... boo hoo ; (  But my babies are the high risk ones, not me.. so for 9 months it is worth it to me to take out any extra environmental things that I can control!  Thank god this is my last one, I can't wait to live a normal life again ; )  I do miss coffee (caffeine free does not cut it) & wine!

  • I've had lunch meat on occasion, a hotdog, and soda/or tea several times a week and often forget my vitamin. I don't do this on a daily basis or usually at the same time. Caffeine has never been a big deal to me, so cutting isn't an issue, I just drink the soda because I"m so bored with everything else. And I drink it reg. not diet. I don't think doing these things periodically throughout thepregancy is going to hurt, but doing it consistanly may be a differnt story. I'd do cooked sushi, but I haven't been able to even think about it since being pg without getting a bit nausous.

  • drink: diet soda, a glass of wine every week, non-alcoholic beers

eat: lunchmeat, hotdogs, splenda, soft cheese (occasionally)

My doc is of the opinion that as long as it is in moderation, it is okay

  • I don't think it's risky, but others IRL do. I am still running- down to 25 miles a week, but that's still a lot for a lot of non-PG people.  I get comments to 'be careful' all the time.
  • I was strictly by the book until about 18 weeks, but now I have a glass of wine with dinner once a week, I drink a half decaf coffee every morning - with a splenda in it, I drink senna tea every night, and I take a prilosec every day.   Oh, and I have had my highlights touched up all throughout the pregnancy.
  • I still go to bootcamp once a week. I usually have to modify the exercises but it just feels so good to be out there doing it (and kicking people's butts that are not 22 weeks pg!)
