Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Practical question Re: D&C

I'm going for my D&C on Thursday.  What should I wear/bring?  Should I expect to have lots of bulky padding/etc and a tshirt dress or something might be more practical than pants/yoga pants?

Also, I'm thinking I could be waiting a bunch and reading material would be good, yes?

Re: Practical question Re: D&C

  • First I would like to say that I am so sorry for your loss.

The day of my D&E I wore yoga pants and t-shirt.  I had my procedure done in the hospital, so as soon as I was got there they had me change in a gown.  After the procedure they probabaly will just send you home with a pad on.  I had my DH and my mom with me so I didn't really bring anything to read.  Good luck with everything :)

  • I wore jeans and a t-shirt...I also changed into a gown at the hospital. Brought my own pads. My hubbie was there as well but if u have no company i guess reading material would be a good idea.
  • DH is going with me (hopefully I can get my mom to stay home, but we'll see)
  • I wore scrubs, (was at work prior) they had pads for me. DH and MIL were with me, but whatever will help you relax and pass time without overthinking is a good idea. In hindsight, I wish I had brought my IPod....
  • i made sure to be as darn near comfortable as possible. so i wore sweat pants and some ratty old t shirt. they gave me disposable underwear and pads, and obviously the gown, there.

so sorry for your loss. i'm sorry you have to deal with this. but i found that the drs and nurses were SO sweet, and really made me feel as comfortable as possible. and although the mc itself sucked, the procedure was the easiest part.

    keep us updated.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss.

I wore yoga pants and a comfy top.  I brought my ipod as well.  If you're the kind of person to associate music and memories, be sure not to listen to your favorite songs or it might ruin them for you.

  • So sorry for you loss.  As PP said, the actual D&C was the easy part.  I wore sweat pants and a comfy tee-shirt.  I also brought my own pads, b/c the hospital ones are like freaking diapers and do not have wings, which I prefer.

My husband and mother came with me...wish my mom had stayed home.

  • I'm very sorry for your loss.  I remember seeing you post on the 1st tri board.

When I went for my D&E, I wore a t-shirt, baggy sweatpants, and flip flops.

My surgery was scheduled for 10:30, but they had me get there at 8:30.  I really wasn't waiting long with nothing to do (and to be honest, I wouldn't have been able to read or do much of anything else because I was still pretty shocked that I was even sitting there).  Anyway, after I checked in, I waited about 15 minutes, then filled out paperwork for the anesthesia, and then about 10 minutes later was called back.  I put on a gown, they did all their paperwork, took vitals, etc.  The anesthesiologist and doctor both came in to talk to me about the procedure and everything.  Around 10 they started my IV of fluids.  At 10:20 they injected the drug to knock me out, 5 minutes later they wheeled me into the operating room, and I don't remember anything after that.  When I woke up in recovery, I stayed there for about 10 minutes, then they wheeled me into the discharge room.  They had put a pad on me while I was still asleep and the recovery nurse helped me check (to make sure I wasn't bleeding TOO much) and gave me a new one & disposable underwear to put on (she cheered me up a bit by saying I MUST save those for very special occasions).  I stayed in the discharge area for about an hour so they could see me eat, drink, and give me instructions.  My husband filled my prescriptions and then we went home.  I was really glad I had my baggy sweatpants since the pads they give you to wear are really thick and bulky.

  • I wore yoga pants and a flowy T shirt.  Which was good since my D&C was under anest. and I felt very woosy and was a little wobbly afterwards.  I needed easy on/easy off to prevent colapsing in the floor of the hospital bathroom.

  • Def bring your own pads. The ones at my hospital didn't have adhesive! I was not prepared for my surgery: they called it an emergency and I didn't know I was going beforehand. I had eaten that morning, so they didn't knock me out completely. The surgery didn't hurt, but it's disconcerting if you're awake. Prepare your hubby so he will comfort you. Bring lots to do, just in case. I spent 10 hours at the hospital for 10 minutes of surgery. I just wanted to sleep while I waited, but when it was done I was restless to get out of there. Pamper yourself and your hubby when you get home.

I wish you luck and hope to see good news from you in the future.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss.  I wore a comfy sweatsuit.  I didn't really wait that long...maybe an hour, but DH was with me and we watched tv.  I also didn't need any huge pads...I only had spotting post D&C.  Good luck with everything.

  • My suggestion is comfy clothes. I was put under for my D&C and as said before was in a hospital gown. I also brought my own pad to change into after the procedure. i had some cramping (like my period cramps) So I also brought the thermacare heat wraps for menstral cramps for the car ride home. That and some ibuprofen helped a lot. Well sorry you have to go through this but the women on these boards help alot.
