Yes, DS has whooping cough. The 24 hour test came back negative but the state DOH called me yesterday that the 5 day test came back positive. Everyone is now on antibiotics and I have to get an updated vaccine on Monday.
I'm glad I trusted my instincts. The doctor was trying to tell me it was just sinuses and allergies and to use saline drops & the humidifier. The coughing fits weren't getting any better and sounded like he was gagging, gasping and choking. Last week the one night when we gave him saline drops he got so mad that he held his breath and passed out; scared the crap out of me.
When it wasn't getting better, I pushed back and had him at the doctor 3 times in 1 1/2 weeks because the coughing fits (only symptom) were (are) awful! After hearing sound bytes online of whooping cough, I thought it may be a possibility. Doctor didn't think so since DS wasn't sickly, other than the bad cough and they hadn't seen a case in 12 years, but told me we could have the test if we wanted it. Felt bad for DS because the test at the hospital was miserable, but I'm so glad we decided to get it so we caught it and he could be treated. So, its just a reminder to trust your instinct because you are your child's advocate.

So glad that you pushed the doc and insisted on it! I remember you posting and many had said that it sounded like whooping cough! DH had whooping cough, and I think a lot of people were affected by the outbreaks a few years ago, they said it might have to do with the number of people that were denying the vaccine (grrrr), but it was really scary when DH had it, I can't imagine DS going through it!
Good that you trusted your mommy instinct...so glad that you guys were able to get it treated so quickly! Hugs and hope for a quick recovery.
