3rd Trimester

anyone have a "good" experience with Pitocin???

I am getting induced tomorrow and terrified to get pitocin, I pray I go into labor naturally today- I've been at 3.5cm dialated since last friday and had contractions that went away.   I want to request to have my water "broke" to see if I will naturally start to contract and go into active labor prior to being put on the Pitocin but I don't know if at that point I'm calling the shots...I guess its worth it to request that.  I just get so nervous thinking its going to be a horrible labor and then lead to a c-section.  I've almost considered cancelling the induction.

I'm being induced 1wk earlier bc baby measurments for those who will respond with "why is your dr. inducing you BEFORE your due date.

Re: anyone have a "good" experience with Pitocin???

  • I had a pretty good experience with pitocin.

I went in at 3cm dliated, they started the pitocin on low and I didn't even feel contractions.  Just a little bit of cramping.  After 3 hours, they upped the dose a little and broke my water.  Then I really felt the contractions!  Three hours after that, Jacob was born.

It all went really well.  But the contractions after my water breaking were VERY intense.  Just be ready!

    GL!

  • I did both kids. I labored for several hours at 5 cm both times. They gave me very low doses of pitocin (I think the 2nd from the bottom dose with DD, lowest dose with DS) and both times went from 5-10 cm very quickly and delivery was a snap.

Sure it sucks being stuck in bed, and I wished I didn't need it, but both times it was what I  needed to get over the 'hump'....even after they broke my water, etc I just stayed at 5 cm until I got the pitocin.

Next time I told my doc I'm just taking a shot of it right when I arrive and we'll get the show on the road LOL. (j/k, but I would if I didn't need to be on monitors)

  • I wasn't induced with Pitocin, but it was used to "augment" my labor when I got stuck at 5cm. That's when I got the epidural, so I couldn't tell that contrax were harder/stronger/etc. at all. Good luck!

  • I don't have any advice, but I just wanted to say good luck tomorrow!
  • My water broke at 40 wks w/DD, but I didn't start contracting at all, so they started me on Pitocin 9 hours later.

My labor was great.  From first contraction to her birth was 6 hours.  I had not been dialated at all the day before that, so pretty much started from scratch.

I won't lie...the contractions were stronger and closer together right from the start.  It certainly wasn't the gradual increase in intensity and timing that I had in my mind.  But, it wasn't horrbile.

    Good luck!

  • Other than being bored, I had a good experience. I started pitocin at 7am, OB broke my water at 3pm, epi at 9pm, and had DS 12:45 am.
  • I went in for induction with my first son at 38 weeks (he measured big).  My OB broke my water at 8:00 am and they started pitocin at 9:00 am.  I was 2 cm dialated before I went to the hospital and after the pitocin was administered, I was fully dialated by about 4:00 pm.  I pushed for about 2 1/2 hours and my little guy was born.
  • I was induced with my son and they gave me cervidil first to soften my cervix around 8-9pm and my water broke on it's own at like 2 am then btwn 6-8am they gave me oxytocin.  Some hospitals give you oxytocin instead.  I did not have any bad experiences with it though.  they had given me an epi around 8-9am cause I had been up all night.  that let me get rested through the harder contractions.  Then it was on to high and they had to turn it down. by the time it was time to deliver the epi was off and there was very little left in my body and only on one side.  So, my experience was good with that, the bad experience was with the epi.  But I will probably do it again with this one.  Hopefully I won't have to be induced this time.  But like you when I went yesterday she said the baby is measuring a little big and my original due date was the 19th but they changed it to the 27th.
  • thank you to all for the reassuring comments.  I appreciate them I am a nervous basket case today

  • I was induced due to high BP last time.  I was a fingertip or 1cm dialated and given cervidel and the other one then pitocin.  It eventually go things moving and no c/s so thats good in my eyes. I was in pain and got an epi with didnt work great but totally worth it.
  • I had a good experience. I was about 3cm when I went in to be induced. They started me on Pitocin at 10am. I had to have my water broken (around 2pm, I think... I was 5cm) and then had an epidural (the contractions were pretty rough and right on top of one another, so I opted for the drugs!). I had my DD at 5:24pm. I have nothing bad to say about my induction. Honestly, I kind of liked being able to sleep well the night before, shower, eat breakfast, and mosey on into the hospital. Best of luck to you! Just keep your mind focused on the LO you'll have at the end of it all. :)

  • I was induced with boy my boys with pitocin and had awesome births!  induced because of high bp.  i was about 3cm 80% when i went in, they started the pit and then broke my water a few hrs later, first time i didn't request epi until after water broke and it was almost too late, went really quick, 2nd time made sure i got epi then broke my water! i think if you already have progress you are safe!  good luck, i love being induced with pitocin just because i dont know any different!   oh and mine were at 37wks and 38.5wks
