Parenting after a Loss

Let's talk about blankets in the crib

So we do not use any as of yet.  Just fleece PJ's and sometimes a sleep sack.  I always thought you were supposed to not use blankets until a year, but now I've heard the AAP changed it to 18 months, which seems ridiculous.  Initially I figured once he got to a year I could just keep using sleep sacks until he was 18 months but then I read that when they start walking, a lot of times they try to walk in their sleep sack in the crib and they trip and smack their head/chin on the crib.  But then the sleep sacks for walkers don't have feet, which to me kind of defeats the purpose of a sleep sack if their bare feet (I'm thinking summer PJ's) are just hanging out.  Which then brings me back to the blanket.

So, rambling over.

When did you start using a blanket?

What kind of blanket?  Was it the grandma kind that's got a lot of holes in it or a lightweight blanket or just a normal blanket?

What are the logistics of using it?  As soon as I put DS in the crib he's rolling all over the place.  Do I just place it on top of him and pray for the best, or do I tuck it into the crib mattress and kind of shimmy him in there?

TIA!!

  • I only use a blanket during the day when I can check on him. I pretty much wrap it pretty tightly around his torso/hips/butt and let the part that covers his legs be loose. He can roll over but the blanket stays in place. I only put it up to his

  • I have used a blanket since the beginning. DD sleeps in the bassinet next to my bed still. Even if she were in her room now, she's able to move the blanket on her own. I know it's not recommended :[ But I'm guessing I'm not the only one using blankets.

  • Not gonna lie, I've been breaking the blanket rule for a long time.  LO just gets too sweaty in fleece jammies, and in regular ones his hands seem cold to me, so I use a blanket.  I used to tuck the end of it between the matress and the crib to

  • We still use sleep sacks.  They're probably the only reason he hasn't climbed out of the crib yet.  We also put socks on him.  That way, when his feet stick out of the open foot ones, they're covered and warm.

  • DS started having a blanket with him when he turned 1 - he got it as a gift for his 1st birthday and he won't go anywhere without it now. It's pretty small - it only really covers about half of his body and it's pretty lightweight (no holes or anything

  • We occasionally place a blanket on DS, & only on his lower half.  His bed is on an incline (reflux) so he usually slides a little down the mattress.  He moves his legs a lot, so the blanket is usually kicked off of him.
