CD...where do I start?

I've always been interested in CDing as my mother did with my brother and I.  It seems that there are a TON of options and I don't even know what all of the acronyms mean... can anyone give me a crash course?  How do I get started with figuring out the logistics - cost, sizes, style/fit options, etc.  What are the basic needs for a newborn and the first few months?  How does it change as the child ages?  What kind of gear is involved - wetbag, diapers, covers, pins/snaps, etc....

I've been reading through posts and I can't believe how overwhelming this seems!

Re: CD...where do I start?

  • First, wow that's a lot of questions.  I'll attempt to tackle one and hopefully someone else is working on some too.

To start, many of us started cloth diapering (CDing) with a diaper trial such as JilliansDrawers.com etc.  Here's some info on what trials are available and what they cost and offer.  https://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=r9l9vdESoWXqp-qxSdRfBZA&single=true&gid=0&output=html

It really helps to get some diapers in your hands so you can see them, all of the sudden pockets and prefolds and fitteds etc. all make more sense.  But you really wont know exactly what works best for you until you put them on your baby.  That's why a trial is nice.  Then you can send back what doesn' work for you and start shopping around for deals on new or used diapers that do work for you.

    Hope that helps a little!

Oh, and wetbags are handy, but you can survive without one if you're not certain about it.  I didn't get a wetbag until I had decided for sure to use CDs all the time

  • I put together an info sheet last week (okay, it's really 5 pages) as a Word file for my friend.  Email me and I can send it to you.  Remove the numbers: 2linz4carron6@8gmail.com
  • I have a super nerdy powerpoint presentation I put together for our Bradley classmates.  Send me a PM with your email and I'll forward it to you.
  • Here's a couple of brief charts with info and pros/cons which might help you decide what might fit your needs.

    What kinda diaper?

    How many diapers?
