getting chilly....blankets?

it's starting to get chilly here...when can we start using blankets in the crib? I put her in fleece footy pajamas and a wearable blanket right now. how long are we supposed to wait? also what are you using during winter to bundle them for going outside? a coat? a full body suit? Just a car seat cover or a blanket? something else?

Re: getting chilly....blankets?

  • Technically you are not supposed to use a blanket until at least a year I think. I know a few moms on here use them...

We use sleepsacks. We will switch to the fleece ones come the late Fall. Also, we have warmer pj's for colder nights.

As for outside: I'm not sure what we will do. I imagine he won't be outside all that much besides being in the car. We will probably do a winter coat for outside time and then a warm blanket for car rides.

  • Right now we use a blanket. But its a thin muslin blanket. I'm not sure what I'll do in the winter. I am not too comfortable giving him a thicker blanket, so maybe I'll go the wearable one route.
  • Sleep sacks right now, and sometimes he is wearing the magic sleepsuit still. Then we have wearable blankets for when he gets a little older, but they are still too big for him right now. I havent bought a winter jacket yet, but i did buy a really cute huge blue fuzzy jumpsuit thing. I think its supposed to be pajamas, but im going to use it for outerwear.

  • I may just have him wear hoodies outside because yesterday I put him in one and it was a lot harder Puking him in his seatbelt just with that. So you couldn't use anything thick at all in the car. They I guess just a blanket. I guess I'll figure out as we go.

You always have the best autocorrects. HAHA. Puking.

  • DS is almost two and still doesn't sleep with a blanket.  (Although that will change this weekend when we get him into his new twin bed!)  He is only just starting to stay in generally the same position while he sleeps, but I still think he is going to kick off his blankets for a long time.

DD is all over her crib.  There's no way a blanket would stay on her.  We'll do fleece footie pjs and a fleece sleep sack this winter.

ETA:  For going places, we'll just use blankets in her infant seat.  She hasn't even broken 13 pounds yet, so I think we'll be able to use it for a while.  I did buy her a snow suit because we'll still play outside this winter since I have the toddler too.

  • Avoiding blankets isn't just about safety, but if they can stay under them. DS just started actually using blankets and sheets all night long even though he's had them around him since he was around one. You want to use the wearable ones, especially when you are concerned about the kids being cold, or they will just end up on top of the blanket and get chilly.

  • We use sleep sacks and a receiving blanket.  He does squirm so much that he usually doesn't stay under it but I usually try to just keep it down by his legs.
