We use Skype. We use it with our parents since they live out of state and we use it when DH is OOT on business. In my experience, cheap webcams = really crappy picture quality. We bought a $50 webcam from Target that works great.
We have a logitech camera that came with Windows Live software. I'd recommend using that over Skype. The few times we used Skype it was not great picture quality and really jumpy. We've never had problems with Windows Live messenger.
No..doesn't matter. I use it, my parents use it, my FIL uses it, my BIL uses it and my MIL uses it to web conference...all of us have different cameras.

You can both sign up for Skype even if you don't have cameras. If one person does than the other person will see the person who has the camera. We use it when my FIL goes on his frequent work trips to China.

my MIL lives in MN so we use skype a few times a month inbetween her visits out here - works great! Sometimes she looks a little pixelated and can be a delay but we think that is due to her connection - they live in the middle of nowhere on a farm and I think their connection speed is just slow.
Re: Anyone use Skype?
really she only needs a camera if she wants your son to see her though...you can skype with her now for her to see your son...
and skype is really easy to use!
