We probably need a new car...

So we just got our car seats installed tonight.  I thought it was too early at 30 weeks, but I'm so glad we did it now!  The first thing they police officer said was - you're going to need a new car in order to fit a car seat behind the driver's seat.

We have a Toyota Corolla 2007 and Graco Snugride car seats.  DH is 6 foot 2" and drives with the seat pretty far back.  I'm 5 ' 7" and have the seat about mid way back, which was JUST going to make it.  There's no way the  car seat will fit when DH is driving (and he does most of the driving out of the two of us).

Just an FYI, the officer recommended a Dodge Caravan, Toyota Rav 4, or Subaru Forrester.

I thought I'd share in case some of you haven't checked to see if your seats will work in your car!!!

For ladies who already have twins:  what car/SUV/minivan do you have?

Thanks!

Re: We probably need a new car...

  • We had the exact problem with our Camry.  DH is about 6'2'' and there was no way he could get in the driver's seat.  We traded it in for a Toyota 4Runner.

  • We're able to fit 3 car seats (flex locs and a convertible) into DH's TINY Honda Fit.  We even took it to the firehouse and had it checked (couldn't use the LATCH, LATCH made them sit crooked, we used the belt).  GL.

  • DH drives a Chevy Avalanche (I know, big truck not small SUV) and there is plenty of room for carseats all the way across.  I drive a Kia Sorento and our two Snugrides fit perfectly on the sides of the backseat.  We could probably even fit another carseat in the middle if we had to.  Even when DH drives it (he's 6'1) there's room for the seats.
  • I have a 2009 Honda Pilot (new body style) and there seems to be plenty of room for two convertible seats.  My husband is 6'6" and puts the seat all the way back and there is still tons of room.

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • We have a Honda Accord Hybrid and fit our Gracro seats in there and now we have the Convertible Seats in there.  It is def. a squeeze but it works we are planning on getting a bigger car (SUV) next year.

Now you're making me worried, we have an '04 Camry as well and haven't tried them in yet, we bought the Peg carseats, what type of carseat did you try it with?? My husband is not as tall as yours so I'm guessing we might be able to make it work...I guess we'll have to try and see :)

  • We have a Honda CR-V and love it. ?Both car seats fit just fine. ?My husband is 6' and we have no problem with the seats being back too far or anything.
  • we just went through this too in the last 2 weeks with an Acura MDX which is a regular sized SUV (not the small kind). MH is only 6' but could not be comfortable with the snugrides. We ended up getting 2 babytrend seats b/c they were the smallest in the store & while he is more comfortable, he doesn't think he could do a long road trip in there but we were not interested in running out to buy a new car just to fit infant car seats just yet. We may have to for the convertibles though, with the rec changing to rear facing til age 2...

It is so weird though how you'd think big cars/SUVs would have more space & often the regular sedans have a bigger backseat!
