DD just started crawling! She hasn't found the staircase yet but I'm already trying to wrap my head around how to gate it off.
My staircase has a wall on only one side. It isn't enclosed by two walls until half way up. This means I would have to install the gate 5 steps up the staircase and try to figure something else out for the bottom half. Plus, putting a gate at the top would be awkward because I'd have to maneuver around another gate after 5 steps down with DD in my arms.
I just want to be like everyone else and have a gate at both the top and bottom! Why is this so hard? Any recommendations?? TIA!

This was my thought as well. SIL puts the baby gate between the wall and the top banister.

a photo would help, yes. Because it sounds like you just have stairs that are completely open on one side with no railing or anything, which seems too crazy to be true (and not up to code).
